A grade Fox potential purchase, advice needed, thanks.

Post by Horstguns »

I am new to this forum, but have recently discovered the attraction of these nice shotguns. Please see the link and offer any advice. Thanks very much for your consideration.

Does this look like a nice shooter to anyone? Is it a fair price for the condition? It looks in line with the Blue Book. Does the repair to the stock and shortened barrels significantly hurt the value as a shooter?

1) the Blue Book is useless for Parkers, Foxes, etc. 2) do not buy a gun with cut barrels and a broken stock for anything but parts )3) there are literally thousands of A grade 12 ga guns out there for sale...pick a good one. This one is not a good one.

Although this gun may be a good shooter I'd pass and wait for one without the issues. You may want to trade/sell it some day and potential buyers will pass because of those shortened barrels and repaired stock making it a tough sell.

A sound, servicable, original barrel length, no repaired stock gun should sell for about the asking price on this gun---and atleast maintain value and marketability.

Thanks very much. That is exactly the information I was seeking.

I'm not too sure these barrels have been cut. Improved cylinder and Improved modified is a lot of choke for a set of cut barrels and we all know that Fox didn't always finish their barrels to exact length. I would like to see the extent and quality of repair to the stock and I think a letter would be in order on this gun before I would count it out.

Dear Twice Barrel:

Thanks for your input. I have dealt with this company before and have had good experience with them. I think I will email them and ask a little more about the gun. From the photos, it looks like what I am seeking in a nice old shooter. I have seen some terrific repairs to ML wrists and know that they can be competently repaired. I don't want the gun for an investment, I just love old doubles and a new one with the architecture, quality and style of a Fox would cost me quite a bit more money than $1600...

You can either carefully mic the bores and chokes or you can get a Calahan letter. Looking at the muzzle is of little use because some of them are together and some of them aren't. It's strange the way internet advertisers admit to a serious defect like a stock repair and then give you good pictures of everything else on the gun except the defect. It looks like a nice gun if the barrels are original.
