Barrel markings again

Post by birdawg »

I am curious about the 3 below the serial number on this set of markings.
I am not familiar with this but I am sure some of you folks would have some ideas of what it signifies?
Any thoughts or suggestion would be appreciated.
Jess
BTW a photo of the gun and a link to more photos are under the C grade photos forum.

That looks like a stamp for a third set of barrels. Does the forearm iron also have a 3 under the serial number? Tom Kidd did an article on two-barrel sets in The Double Gun Journal. Guns that started life as two-barrel sets had a 1 under the serial number on one barrel flat and a 2 on the other. Same with the forearms. Guns that had a second set of barrels added later just had a 2 on that set. Is there a three with the serial number on the back side of the ejectors?

Thanks for your reply Dave.
There is not a 3 on the forearm iron and the forearm has a slight amount of play.

There is a 3 on the inside of the ejectors.

It sure would be nice to find the other sets of barrels in any condition.

Got a letter on this cute little smokepole? A no-safety smallbore says plantation Quail gun to me, where you carry the gun in your saddle scabard, and only load when you dismount and walk in for the flush.

I though the sans saftey was interesting on a 16 gauge.
The letter has been requested.
I was surprised to see no grade stamp on the the water table. Serial number and grade markings are present on the head of the stock and the underside of that lovely long tang.
