Gun fired on closure.

Post by watzker »

When firing both a previous Fox Sterlingworth 12g and my present one, I've had the r barrel fire after loading both chambers and on closing the gun. I might have inadvertently brushed the front trigger w/ my finger but don't think so. I've fired two boxes of 2 1/2" shell since then w/o a similar occurence. Has any one else ever had this happen?

I've had it happen several times with different Foxes. First, let me say I've fired in excess of 30,000 rounds through all my Foxes combined, so I don't see it as "common" or a Fox "problem."

I've encountered everything on the continuum from a 6 lb pull weight suddenly being 3 lbs, or 1 lb, or firing on the closing (the scariest), or failing to set at all. I've had one case of a broken hammer so that the gun would not cock. That one was obvious and permanent until I replaced the hammer. Every other case resulted from something getting under the triggers, interfering with their complete return which resulted in the sear failing to fully seat in the hammer's sear notch. The giveaway is the fact that it's intermittent. A broken part doesn't fix itself, but dirt can move around and the gun can go from active to inactive and back again.

On 2 occasions, with different guns, it was the little safety guide stud falling out and rolling around. The stud is a press fit in a hole in the underside of the top tang. Both guns had been previously disassembled for refinishing; don't know if that's why the stud fell out but it seems reasonable it might be a less-snug fit on reassembly. It happened to me with my big Fox this year during the Bo-Whoop competition....

On other occasions I've found burnt powder grains, tiny wood chips and other dirt accumulated under the trigger return spring. In any case, it's an indication the stock should be removed and the innards cleaned at the very least.
