Gauge and chamber lengths stamped on Barrels

Post by grouse28 »

When did this info start appearing on sub gauge Fox's?
Saw one that the gauge and chamber length looked different than the made in Philadelphia stamp.
An after market stamp, added by a gunsmith at some later date??
Thanks

I believe that any Philly gun sent back to Fox post Savage takeover had the chambers extended to 2 3/4" and that was stamped on the barrels. Stamps were rather ugly and large. Maybe they had liability concerns even back in the 1930's.

The SAAMI meeting where it was suggested that manufacturers begin putting the chamber lengths on their shotguns was in 1937. I have guns shipped in 1937 and 38 which don't have the stamping and one 1938 shipped gun which does. By 1939 it is pretty universal.

There was an X for sale at the Fox tent at Hauseman's a few years ago and the chamber length stamp went right into the barrel engraving.

I thought that the ask price reflected a deduct for it.

I almost bought it but I didn't need another one in 12 gauge, especially one that was not nicer than the one I already have.

From the factory the gauge, chamber length, and proof tested was engraved (two Lines) but this was for original barrels on a DE. I am not sure of returned barrels.
