Quail engraving on action bottom
Quail engraving on action bottom
I noticed the nice quail ( or is it some other bird ?) engraving on the bottom of the 20 ga FE sold at auction and wondered if there had been other Fox guns recorded or seen with quail or other birds (other than ducks) on the bottom of the action? I know of one with Mountain quail, are there others?

Re: Quail engraving on action bottom
My late B 16 gauge has quail as do the other late B's but not like the FE.

Thanks for posting those. I should have said standing quail.

With those tail feathers you could be right. I wonder what other unusual engravings are out there?terc wrote:Birddawg, To me that looks like a mother grouse and chicks, not a quail. Either way its great.

Here is an FE-Grade 16-gauge picture I have in my files --
There are FE-Grades like this one that were ordered with all scroll --
and similarly this DE-Grade --

Thanks Dave, So were those birds normal on FE's ?
I guess FE's would be a small sample lot in any gauge.

Check The Double Gun Journal, Volume Fourteen, Issue 2, pages 104 and 106, for the game scene of three grouse with one on a log on the late "Pop" Headrick's FE-Grade 13291, and Julia's Fall 2010 catalog, Lot #1129, for Teddy's F-
Grade 13292 with a similar game scene. While the game scenes on the bottoms of the receivers are essentially the same, note how different the scroll and foliate engraving on the trigger plates are.
