Well Tom, let me tell you about Saturday. First, please notice that I haven't posted any pictures. Saturday morning I drove to Lake county and hit the woods at about 8:15. I walked on the "family" 40 acres (mostly oak and pines) for close to 2 hours and flushed one robin and one squirrel. Then I drove to a larger, and thicker piece of our property. I instantly flushed 2 birds, but barely caught a glimpse of one. Within the next 10 minutes I had 3 more flushes, probably the same young birds, but all I could see was foliage. I hunted for another hour, but no more birds. By 11:30 it was over 80 degrees and I was getting well acquainted with the local mosquitos and gnats. I decided to proceed to my cottage in Traverse City and go swimming in the bay. Hopefully the birds will still be there in a few weeks when it's cooler and the leaves start falling.
Thanks for the nice comments. Sophie is a little shit in the house. Into everything. That said, she is a little demon in the woods. Great bird finder and really will hold a point. Retrieving is a work in progress, but I don't want to force break her to retrieve as that can take the spirit out of a pup. She's 2.5 years old. Michigan next month and then lots of Woodcock chasing here in Va and hopefully a grouse or two. Maybe even a Pheasant in Pa. First pointing dog in my life. Takes some getting used to.
