While I appreciate all veterans service, in all areas, waving the flag does not excuse crude talk. I know too many Vietnam vets who are true gentlemen and know how to properly address others.
And, political correctness and gentlemanly behavior are nowhere near the same thing.

Welcome Home Soldier . You sure as hell didn't offend an old S. O. B like me . From a hell raisen Paratrooper, MACV SOG Bastard !FoxintheHenHouse wrote:Some would have gringed to have been in Vietnam when a common expression talking about the job the Marines just did was "you sons of bitches kicked ass". All Marines responded with a thank you, of course no offense taken. And being "in country" for five years, with just about unbearable tropical weather makes me very appreciative, not arrogant, of what Mother Nature provides for me now. I guess I don't realize these are surely different times now. Politically correct and all, from flags, to traditions, to coining a phrase. And to get back on thread, have a great fall season, no matter where you are.

Use of the "poor bastard" term may not offend some but it does others; and a simple outcome would have been to just say it was a slip and that I'm sorry, instead of time traveling back 4 decades in an attempt to justify its use and to sidestep what came across as superior attitude. I greatly appreciate the sacrifices of all who've served but that doesn't elevate you to ignore the literal meaning and especially in today's society with many who don't understand the military term derivation, and with a large and growing number of children born of unwed parents and who carry that stigma. What can be said in private to your buds in a bar room or hunting camp setting can be offensive here. Also consider that members and users may have children with interest to read posts on the site. I know several who do. Yeah no doubt they hear worse at school or on the street but that's no justification for crude language or for a put-down of others.
