Interested parties may want to pull out The Double Gun Journal, Volume Nine, Issue 1, and review Tom Kidd's article "A Three-Ring Circus" on pages 63 to 72. Perhaps in the early years A.H. Fox Gun Co. did some experimenting with receiver profiling and these receivers ended up on employee guns?

I have a gun with the same angle on the cheek panel checkering . The stock has the correct serial numbers but the drop is over a 1/4" less than the letter states it should be. It has been a curiosity to me too but i thought the stock was altered to change the drop by the factory when the gun was returned to add the second set of barrels.Researcher wrote:Thanks for the additional pictures, Kevin.
The way the leading edge of the checkering panel is at an angle, rather then parallel with, the rear of the frame, leads me to think this stock may have been a take off from another gun and then fitted to this frame. I kind of see that checkering pattern as an evolutionary step from the 1913 D-/DE-Grade checkering to the later DE-Grade checkering.

I noticed the irregularities in Fox cheek panel checkering years ago. I have seen many where the front edge of the considering is not parallel with the rear edge of the action, but none quite as severe as that one.
