10 Days and counting.....

Post by Jeff S »

Okay hunters. It's 10 days until the duck opener in southern Michigan. Are you ready?

Good memory. It's one of them. I just spruced it up this evening and the water is way up. I only fell and got water in my waders once. :)

Jeff, I was wondering if your blind has a "dog platform" for your retriever? I can't tell from the picture. Do all those "lily pads" decompose with cold weather? Your blind is very well concealed!

Sadly, I've been "dogless" for about 15 years. I can safely wade in about 90% of the pond. The lily pads were a challenge for my dog, Kelly, because it made it difficult to see a dead duck. Fortunately, she had a good nose. Once there is a frost, the lily pads lay down and the pond has a much different look.

This is what our marsh looks like after a summer of severe drought. There should be 2 feet of water in the pot hole right now. Bone dry!!
There is so much food from the draw down that every duck in our flyway could have a feast. Here is to hoping it will rain like hell!!

Craig, knowing how much you love duck hunting, I hope you get some rain. Plus, I can't stand the thought of going through the fall without seeing pictures of Lucy with fat mallards. On the other hand, if you don't get any rain, you might as well sell one of the HE's to me. :)

Before I got into Foxes I had a wonderful duck/goose spot on a private 38 acre lake about ten miles from where I'm typing this. Hunted there for close to 10 years before it got developed. Those suburban types came in an force and many of those folks if they even hear a gunshot immediately call law enforcement. More then once we would have Johnny law show up and motion us over to come talk with them. They would acknowledge we were doing nothing wrong but they just wanted us to know they were receiving complaints. Finally the burden got too great. About a year after we had pulled the plug and sold the decoys/boat etc. the lake was officially shut down to all hunting. They now have paddleboats on the lake. Different world for sure.

Me thinks they are up north. They will be there in time. Nice looking spot.
