Manufactured Dates?

Post by MPCGunsmithing »

I am new to the detailed history of the A.H. Fox Gun Company (And all it's many other company names) and am currently researching information on a Grade "A" 12 Ga. A.H. Fox, from Phila, PA gun for a customer of mine. I just wanted to know if anybody out there could tell me where I can find out the year of manufacture for the said serial number I am appraising. SN: 27XX.

Blue Book 36th ed. gives a range of years... and the historian's contact info, but my customer does not want to spend the money on an official letter of authenticity just yet.

Thanks for any help you have to offer.

The current working hypothesis is that the Ansley H. Fox 12-gauge doubles with serial numbers from 1 to 3000 were made, or at least started into production, at the original A.H. Fox Gun Co. factory at Wayne & Bristol Streets during 1905 and 06. At the end of 1906 the A.H. Fox Gun Co. acquired the factory that had originally been built for the Philadelphia Arms Co. at North 18th Street & Windrim Avenue, and moved there. It appears that at the new factory they began around serial number 7000. The surviving production cards for graded 12-gauge Ansley H. Fox doubles begins around serial number 9600. Best we can say is that we estimate a gun in the 27xx serial number range would be from late 1906.

Hopefully you are not dealing with serial number 2728!!

I've been told this list isn't always accurate, but it may assist. If correct, it would indicate the manufacture date was 1907
