AH Fox Sample Gun???
AH Fox Sample Gun???
Hello everyone,
I purchased this shotgun from my uncle who has owned and operated a gun shop for 47 years. He swears it is a Fox, and I agree with him. However, it does not have any official markings ANYWHERE on the gun except for the serial number on the water table and patent dates on the forearm tang (all visible in the pictures below). I have been searching for quite a bit and cannot find any descent information about what exactly this gun might be. We are both thinking it is a sample gun that was produced soon after Ansley Fox started his own company. The serial number seems to indicate it was made in 1906. Any help from you gentlemen would be greatly appreciated. Sorry about the photos being links. I could not find any other way to post them on here.
Thanks in advance,
Alex

Re: AH Fox Sample Gun???

There is a production card for this serial number, so you might want to join the A.H. Fox Collectors Association, Inc. and get a copy or order a letter from the Savage historian --

Any markings on the barrel flats? About the only picture not provided.

Re: AH Fox Sample Gun???
If I did not already use my "free one" I would use it for this gun and post the card. Someone please step up! Let's share the story on this one!

Re: AH Fox Sample Gun???
I was planning on ordering this production card today so I can prove what it is when I eventually sell it. Is it now in someone else's possession? Also, some information is cut off in the photo.....thanks guys. You've been a lot of help so far.

Re: AH Fox Sample Gun???
Here's my take from what I see in the pics, to include the ill fitting fore end wood and lack of serial number on the f/e iron. I think this is a conversion from extractor to ejectors and perhaps not the best job at that. Also the frame appears to have been re engraved by someone, post-factory ..... the engravings seem to lack the symmetry and execution typical of factory work. It's hard to tell on that one pic of the barrels but it looks like there are vestiges of the factory matting on the top rib, and if so the rib was polished and barrels re blued at some point. Also the barrel legends were probably struck off when re blued. It's jmo but I'd say this is someone's project gun and it certainly has an interesting story to tell. But all told, I don't believe this is anything like a factory sample gun.
