This week we decided to hunt woodcock/grouse nearby. When David DeFernelmont and I arrived on the grounds the woodcock were everywhere!! Monday we hunted a bit over 2 hours and flushed 24-30 woodcock with both of us limiting out (3 birds each). Tuesday we went back, this time I took a young man who works at our range (Jake from State Farm). He never hunted woodcock until Tuesday and he went ballistic!! He took home 2 birds and I took home 3 again (3 birds on 4 shots). We hunted just under 2 hours and flushed 15 different birds!! My 16g Fox SW with 7/8 oz RST "Woodcock Spreaders" (#10 shot) did the trick. Deacon and Ghillie were phenomenal!! They both really got into finding the doodles!! Deacon even retrieved a few, which is an added bonus!! Good times, good dogs, good guns and good friends!! Most likely head back a day or two early next week for more shotgun fun!!
great hunting. Nice dogs Im hoping to do some woodcock hunting this fall with my A grade.
Some of the old timers around home tell me they migrate through SW Missouri? Im going to watch.
No doubt Daryl! We had a lot of rain last night so we're hitting the covert again tomorrow. More rain coming Tuesday night-Wednesday, so we'll probably get back there on Thursday too. We'll chase the woodcock until they move on then we'll get after grouse. Stoat Power!!!
Well, we hunted yesterday (10/26) and today (10/27) in the same area. Yesterday we flushed 2 woodcock with no shots. Today we hunted a lower section of brushy creek bottom and some more strips of managed habitat and flushed only 1 with no shot. Looks like the flight moved through. Have to hit a few spots we did habitat work projects on this Spring and see what transpires. It was fun while it lasted.
Sure do Jim! Those little russet fellows are a hoot to hunt though. Hope the next flight comes in over the weekend so they're here for a Monday and Tuesday hunt.
