Good find at the Southern

Post by Silvers »

Has anyone seen a thin Hawkins pad like the one on the left? I hadn't before Thursday. The regular one with heart-shaped vents is about 1.080" thick but the thinner one shown here is only about .812". Hole spacing is the same on both pads. Just the thing if you want a little extra LOP but don't want to cut the stock for the regular pad ..... remove the HRBP and install one of the thinner ones. Also, the thin one would probably look better on a Fox small bore.

Frank,
I found one of those NIB a few years ago and added it to my 16 gauge Fox Sterlingworth with 30" barrels. It came with the original box and it was labeled as being for a rifle. Brought the LOP out to circa 14 5/8" which was about perfect for me.

PS. Just checked and the below is a link to a Hawkins Advertisement from 1931 that I found on Ebay. The one I had was the smaller size of the two available and yes indeed perfect for a small bore Fox.

Thanks for your reply Tom. That sure sounds like the ones I got down south. Mine are the small size at a hair over 5" long. BTW I did see your current custom work-in-progress Fox in Danny Rossiter's booth, along with one commissioned by another member. They both looked GOOD!

Thanks for the kind words Frank. Sweet little Grouse/Woodcock gun. I'll be up at the NE SXS with Dan and his family and will see you then as well as the other Fox folks.

Nice find. I bought two Hawkins pads on Ebay about five years ago. One is the standard color the other is black. Was the black pad an original option or is it a reproduction modern pad ?
Thanks, Dave

I've seen the black from time to time and they were in vintage boxes. I do believe they are original pads.
