Last hunt of the season with the 12g SW and 2 Setters!

Post by Mike of the Mountain »

Tuesday we finished up the season at Ringneck Ridge. My buddy Ed and I hunted over Deacon Blue and Ghillie Rutledge and enjoyed a great morning!! Temps were low 40's so it was sweatshirt weather and we finished before the snows arrived again!!

Mike great pictures, the cover looks a little flat but considering the winter not to bad. I bet the pups enjoyed getting out for a romp.

Thanks guys! There was some cover still worthwhile, but after the winter we had most was mashed down flat, even some of the switchgrass. I love hunting over these boys. Deacon is the oldest and the leader of the two at 6 years. Ghillie is a mere pup at 2 years. Both are 70 lbs + and go all day!! I'll be taking Deacon up to Maine again come October for the first week of grouse/woodcock up there. They both hunt close in the fields, no more than 50 yards. Deacon loves hunting woods and he pretty much stays 35 yards and in. Never taught either to retrieve, they both literally picked it up on their own!!

Mike, at that size are they Ryman setters? The darker one has the colors of a Llewellin, but I've never seen a Lew that big.

Nice pics! Love that old fashioned 9 o'clock tail on a setter! THATS what the Fox engravers were trying to capture on those floor plates

VAturkey, they are a Ryman type. Deacon is full blooded Decoverly and Ghillie is from the first litter of the GHR Consortium, 1/2 Decoverly, 1/2 Rhys. Deacon is about 70 lbs and Ghillie is 76.

My Neighbor has a Decoverly which is about 3 years old and also weighs 70 lbs. The dog is a non-hunter due to a hearing issue discovered when it was a pup. Very laid back dog that spends most of its time strolling around the neighborhood with its owner. I have never seen another dog so laid back. Maybe its the hearing issue.

Both of our Setters are very laid back. Their usual position is head on the arm of the sofa or chair while just "chillin'"! But when I put their collars on and get my vest out, look out, the switch turns on!! :!:

My wife usually bring one of them over to Ernie's on Friday or Saturday evening during his Northeast Classic.

I'm sure I'll be there one of those days with Dan Rossiter. Look me up at Dan's booth and say hello. I'd very much like to see the Rymans if they are around.

I'll swing by and say hello to everyone there for sure. Dan will have my little custom 20 gauge on his table as a display. I think it will be going to the southern as well.
