2015 Spring Southern and Drake Landing

Post by SmithShady »

Over the Christmas Holidays I spoke to Dan Andrews, the owner of Drake Landing, a sporting clays course in the Fuquay Varina area of NC. Dan mentioned a conversation that he had with the local Barbour Clothing rep about the group of side by side shooters that have showed up before and during the Spring Southern event to shoot at his club. Dan asked me if he and Barbour sponsored a shoot for us, how many people I thought would attend? This would not be an AHFCA sanctioned event, but between the three collector organizations I believe we had over 20 shooters come out last year. My suggestion to Dan was that if we did this, I thought we should do something the Thursday before the Southern starts, so as not to interfere with the main event. While there is a group of us who have shot there all four days over the past two years, I wouldn't want to organize anything official that would compete with the Southern or participation in the Parker/LC Smith challenge.

So, I put it to you guys who have probably already started to think about plans for this year. Would you make the trip a day early to do some shooting at Drake Landing? While I know it will be tough to do, I would like to see what kind of commitment I could give him on attendance. I posted this on the Parker site this morning, and already have 10 people committed to coming. If you're thinking of making the trip to the Southern this year, I promise you it will be worth your time to come and shoot.

Mike

Update 4/7/15: Great responses to this from several here and also on the Parker site. We're up to 23 so far (including two people who want to come but are still firming up plans) I posted this on the Double Gun site yesterday as well, so we are still looking for more!

Did we shoot at Drake Landing Wednesday or Thursday in '14? I thought it was Wednesday. If so, I'm in for Wednesday. 8)

I shot there on Saturday of last year in the afternoon after the sub gauge events in Sanford. What an amazing course with some nice people running it. I am traveling on Thursday down to the Southern so would not be able to shoot there on that day. I plan on shooting the afternoon of Friday and Saturday at Drakes so would be able to gather at that time if possible.

I hope that everyone that can make it has a great time on Thursday!!! I cannot wait for the Southern!!!

thanks

Mike,

An unofficial group of guys from the PGCA will shoot at Drakes each day prior to going to the Southern at Deep River. Some of us have been seen at Drakes shooting AH Fox guns! You are welcome to shoot with us.

Will do Mark. I'll have a full schedule of shooting at Deep River so as soon as Bill opens the course, I'll be banging away. And of course I need to be in the tents early just in case there's a deal to be found! :o Never know what Fox or Pah-kah I may find this year. :D

I posted a reply over on the Parker boards, thought I'd cover my bases and respond here as well. Go ahead and put my name on the list for this pre-event, I will be there. Look forward to meeting and shooting with you guys. Jim

I'm pushing this up to the top again since we are now only a month away from the Southern. If you're making your plans for the Southern, please consider coming down a day early to join us for this event on Thursday. We have 20 people committed so far, and would love to see more of you there!

Thanks,

Mike

Shady, you can add David DeFernelmont to the list. I'll be traveling down with him and we'll be shooting together at Drake and Deep River.

The days are ticking by, but to slow!! I'm excited for the event, can't wait to shoot with you guys. Though the master class thing has me nervous, I usually hit more than I miss, but that's about all. I always have fun though and that's all I care about. See you guys shortly.

Don't sweat the Master Class shooters, there will be plenty with no class like myself!

Seriously though, I don't think I saw a single scorecard used last year. This is all about fun, some gun show and tell in the parking lot, some GREAT food and the breaking of a target here and there.

Oh I don't sweat the small stuff, not in a long while now. One of the guys I shoot with regularly is a 90% shooter and let's just say I'm not that good. We still laugh and have a good time, that's all I care about. I look forward to the show and tell though, I've acquired some interesting pieces in my time. Still, needs to get here fast, I need the break.
