Side Panels

I've noticed that CE grades and above have "checkered" side panels. Today I saw an AE on gunsinternational with checkered side panels. Was it an option, or was it added later in life?

Most likely it was added to cover a pin repair through the head of the stock.
Recoil is most noticed when I miss
