Another 100 year old "Fox"

Post by ROMAC »

The guy I got the HE from also had this nice A.

I was going to stiffin my back and tell him no way! No way was I going fall for his agressive sales tactics and cave to his outrageous demand that I buy this gorgeous A at a very fair price from him. To heck with original configuration! Case colors are just showey anyway. Mirror bores?, probably doesn't shoot straight so it might have just been left in a corner prior to WWI. He could just sell that gun to the next guy. Let me tell you I was ready to tell him where he could go!

But then I saw the serial number...... Same born on date (1914) as Tool's DE and Researcher's Meat-in-the-Pot. Could it be? Separated at birth? Torn from each other at Windrim Avenue and 18th Street in Philadelphia? The same telltale early 2nd generation engraving as Meat-in-the Pot with the small diamonds that do not quite reach the fences? Who was I to keep them apart? Had I no heart?

So lightning struck twice and now I have a 12 gauge A from 1914. The wood is in darn nice shape too!

Yeah, you wouldn't have to twist my arm to much to take that one, especially with that nice furniture!

As mentioned above, has anyone else ever noticed how small the "diamond" shapes engraved on the early second generation Grade A's are? They are much more elongated on the receiver and thumb release in later years. For me it is a telltale sign of an early date. In this instance 1914.
