Sounds to me if neither of you have seen them they weren't an option back in the day. Appreciate the responses. Tom

Tom, sounds like we both have the same dilemma. Even though Fox guns didn't have the option for heel/toe clips, heel/toe plates or even a skeletonized butt plate, doesn't mean we can't have them on our "CUSTOM" guns. Hence the term CUSTOM. I'm leaning toward a skeletonized butt plate with checkering inside. But the heel/toe clips are pretty nice too.

Skeleton Buttplates were an option for Foxes back in the day. I think Galazan will sell them in the white and Dan can certainly fit them. The 20 gauge he is working for me has a Parker Skeleton Buttplate on it. That said, I think Heel and Toe clips are really special as well and are seen a lot less.

for me, I need more protection of the butt. rough shooting in my neck of the woods tends to involve the more than occasional partial fall and my way of thinking is that a HRBP offers a bit more protection to the toe and horn better yet. But I haven't seen Horn as a factory option.

I believe Glenn Fewless is still making skeleton buttplates. He probably makes heel and toe plates also.

The option of the skeleton butt first appears in the 1908 "Campfire" Catalogue No. 21. The only options listed in the earliest Wayne & Bristol Streets address "Finest Gun in the World" catalogues were Lyman sights and a Silvers recoil pad. By the later "Finest Gun in the World" catalogues with N. 18th Street & Windrim Avenue address the A.H. Fox Gun Co. also offered cast off for $5. and Monte Carlo for $7.50. All that said, about 35 to 40 years ago there was a very early, very ratty, B-Grade, Ansley H. Fox, serial number 75, with a skeleton butt at Green Top Sporting Goods north of Richmond. It was a dog, but I probably should have bought it for the skeleton butt!! Maybe it is at Eightbore's house now. The option of a skeleton butt last appears in the blue linen 1936 A.H. Fox catalogue put out by Savage Arms Corp.

I acquired a very nice set off an english gun that are simply beautiful with an amazing spur. Existing scroll will be polished off and they will most likely be incorporated in my next (and last) custom Fox. That will give me all 3 gauges and that's enough. This one will be 16 gauge to go with the Abby Gun and the 20 gauge currently in the white that will be engraved (simply) by Bob Strosin.

This is the only original skeleton butt gun I have found. Read the letter, note the LOP!

I love the skeleton butts. They have a classic styling that a hard rubber butt plate or a period recoil pad just don't match..

While looking for something else I stumbled across my notes for serial number 19481, a DE with half-pistol grip and skeleton butt that Tony had at the Vintage Cup at Sandanona in 2002.
