Early Philadelphia Arms Fox

Post by c191 »

Have an early Fox and trying to get more info on it,
It is a 2 barrel set, 26 and 28 in marked Philadelphia with Krupp barrels
It has an engraved single setter on each side with 2 quail on the bottom of receiver
Serial number C 191 (all numbers match)
Any info on this gun would be appreciated
Thanks

Is it one of these --

or one of these --

Feb 3, 1906, American Field

We need to see pictures of your gun before we can tell you anything about it. No records survive for Fox guns that early, either Philadelphia Arms Co. or A.H. Fox Gun Co.

Yes
It appears to be the first one
I did realize that it has a setter on one side and a pointer on the other and has FOX engraved there too
It is marked Philadelphia Arms Co on the barrels Krupp Steel
Thanks

How early did the dogs on the side appear?

All three of the Philadelphia Arms Co. C-Grades I've recorded have a dog on each side. The A.H. Fox Gun Co. C-/CE-grades either had the banner on the sides or the oval with a couple of birds. I've seen the oval with the birds as early as a high three-digit serial number and the banner style well into the 2xxx range

Thanks Dave,
The variations are always interesting. I guess living in the age of mass production makes it even more so.

First you need an account on a photo hosting site like Photobucket.com (its free), and then load the photos there. Copy the picture's "Direct" Link, pick Img on this site and paste the direct link between the that comes up.

If you can't figure it out, email the pictures to AHFCA@comcast.net and I'll post them.

One thing we might question would be the 26-inch barrels. The only Philadelphia Arms Co. catalogue I've ever had the opportunity to examine, one of the two known versions of the large-size 1905 catalogue, only offers 28-, 30- and 32-inch barrels. This is only the fourth C-Grade to come to light and quite interesting to students of Ansley H. Fox history. This is so far the lowest serial number C-Grade to come to light as well.

Hate to be a pest, but now that you have really whetted our appitite, we want more pictures! Bigger pictures!! Better pictures!!!

Tom,

I'm sure you've seen my C-Grade at Las Vegas.
