12 Ga (.729) .000 .005 .009 .012 .019 .025 .035
16 Ga (.667) .000 .004 .007 .010 .015 .020 .028

Some manufactures varied over time but not significantly.

Sorry for the alignment problems. The table looks fine when I pasted it.

Thanks that will help a lot. needed to measure the ic and mod chokes but didn't know the measurement to look for . if a person is wanting to check the chokes on a fox how can he figure out if they are correct from the factory instead of waiting 6 to 8 weeks for a Callahan letter . were there many 30inch barreled fox with ic mod choke . i figure there is i just thought it might be opened up. most 30 I've seen are full full or mod full. don't want to buy if its not correct .

Are we talking about a Philadelphia Fox, or a later Savage made Fox Gun? Earlier Philadelphia guns had long conical shaped chokes that were around 4 inches long, give or take. If you've got a bore gauge and can measure the chokes properly, there should be no flat spots in the chokes. Later Savage Chokes were typically shorter, I've measured quite a few that are around 2 1/2 inches long. I would say that an IC/MOD choke setup would not be uncommon, but others here can probably make a better call there than me.

Very few 30-inch barrels left North 18th Street and Windrim Avenue bore improved cylinder and modified. There is still a lot of "mystery" to shotgun chokes. Choke is defined as the % of the charge the gun puts in a 30-inch circle at 40 yards. If .032" puts 70% of the charge in a 30-inch circle at 40 yards it is full choke. If .040" puts 70% of the charge in a 30-inch circle at 40 yards it is also full choke.

Don't want to wait for a letter from John Callahan? Dues paying members of the A.H. Fox Collectors Association, Inc. get one free card look up per year for Graded guns (we don't have copies of the Sterlingworth records), and additional look ups can be requested for $25 payable by PayPal. One makes the request in the "Members Forum" and a jpeg of the card is emailed, usually within 24 hours.

Where did you get that table, Twice Barrel ? I've never seen Improved Mod listed as being more open that Mod. Is that possibly a real old table, from a time when IM was considered less choke than M ?

Light Mod is less constriction than Mod, Improved Mod is more constriction than Mod, by today's standards.

Thanks, Stan

Stan you are correct . Some how an incorrect heading was inserted when I copied this from the original source (Michael Murphy). Here is the chart with the correct headings:

Bore Size Cyl Skeet 1 Imp-Cyl Skeet 2 Mod Imp-Mod Full
10 Ga (.785)
12 Ga (.729) .000 .005 .009 .012 .019 .025 .035
16 Ga (.667) .000 .004 .007 .010 .015 .020 .028
20 Ga (.617) .000 .004 .007 .009 .014 .019 .025
28 Ga (.550) .000 .003 .005 .007 .012 .016 .022

Twice's chart is printed on the back of the Michael Murphy & Sons business cards; kinda handy if you have the chance to pick one up.
