Help Identify This Gun?

Post by KBoy420 »

Hello,

I was referred to this forum from another I belong to. I came across an A.H. Fox Double Barrel 12ga shotgun that was my grandfather's. He doesn't know much about it and I am trying to find out what model it is and whatever other info I can learn about it. It really is a beautiful gun and I believe it would be highly desirable. I have some pictures I wanted to share, but am unable to post them - something about the board attachment quota being reached. Perhaps someone could allow me to send them some pictures to see what I can learn?

By the way, the s/n is in the 23,000s. Some research suggested that would put it as being manufactured around 1913. Can anyone confirm that?

Thank You!

You could email the photos to me at AHFCA@comcast.net and I'll post them.

A bit later than 1913, more like 1915 or 16, but one never knows as some serial numbered recievers remained in the work-in-process inventory for a long time befor they were actually completed and shipped. I have two guns in the 214xx range only 14 serial numbers apart, and one was shipped in 1914 and the other in 1918.

As they say The serial numbers and ship dates don't always line up very well. I have an A grade number 222xx that shipped on Oct 1, 1915. You have a nice looking gun! John

The A-Grade was the entry-level graded gun of the Ansley H. Fox line. In the graded guns one got a choice of grip style and could specify stock dimensions. However, many of the entry-level A- and AE-Grades were built for stock. Between 1913 and 1914, the A.H. Fox Gun Co. now under the management of the Godshalks changed the engraving styles on their guns from the more delicate style engraving used by Ansley from 1905 into 1913 to bolder floral styles designed by their new head engraver William Gough. Here is the text and the picture of the A-/AE-Grade from the 1915 "Fox Gets the Game" catalogue --
