...simple pleasures are the best !

Post by MARSHFELLOW »

......so today was enjoy the dog & wingshooting afternoon after 3 days of deer hunting. The boy was getting pretty miffed at being left home. He did what he knows how to do and so did I most of the time, except when I forgot to reload my ol 20ga after shedding my jacket after getting alittle warm a half hour into this hunt. A lucky bird heard a "click....click" behind it as it flew off. I thought I was having a double malfunction until I realized that it ws operator error...gotta put the shells in the gun, brass to the back. Anyway, we put it together after that.

The 20ga gun is one of my favs, not much to look at, doesnt fit me for crap, Kautzky trigger, 28" bbls....dont remember how its choked, but it harvests it's share of birds. My blackdog Magnum is seven this season which really bugs me cuz I know we're well past that half-way point already.

A good looking scene there Tom! A Kautzky trigger and a beavertail on a 20ga Savage era Sterlingworth? Did she start out that way, or were these additions later in her life?

........good question. The gun's letter that I got from JTC years ago says nothing about the Kautzky or BT. I bought the gun from the son of a fella who worked at Savage back when (he was in his 60's when Dad & I bought it 20 years ago. The gun has never left Utica. I'm fairly sure that the SST & BT were installed at Savage/Fox, either on an conventional special order or a "side door" kinda job.

The letter says Sterlingworth Field, 20 gauge, 28" IC & M, 14"LOP (which it no longer is), 5 3/4- 6 pounds. Shipped August 26 1937.

I will get a pic or two of the B/T as long as we're on the factory B/T conversation on another thread.

To borrow a phrase from Researcher, that is my "meat in the pot" go to gun...rain, snow, briars & brambles.

marshfellow, I'm looking at this picture again (very compelling image) and thinking, don't look at the fact that he is at or over the half-way mark, just think of all the beautiful seasons you have to look forward with your lab. Great pic, and thanks for sharing.

Tom, your Magnum is a great looking dog. I also have a black Lab. She is 10 1/2 years old and still has not lost a step. Good luck to you and Magnum for the rest of the season and years to come. Jim
