Well, I had several pictures ready to go, but Photobucket.com seems to be having a lot of trouble with a new format they've begun today. Why can't people leave things alone for us geezers once we figure out how to make it work!!

In the 1905 UMC ammo catalogue they state "All "Nitro Club" shells since August 1, 1904, have been greatly strengthened and improved by an inside brass cup reinforce." Beginning in the 1910 Remington Arms Co. / Union Metallic Cartridge Co. catalogue we see the term "Steel Lined" being used. In that catalogue they state "All Nitro Club shells are Steel Lined, thus making them the Strongest, therefore the Safest and Best. This form of reinforce, adopted only by us, also materially improves their shooting qualities, as shown by their superior pattern, penetration and velocity." They made the same statement about their high brass "Arrow" shells. Unfortunately, none of the cutaways of their Nitro Club and Arrow shells in any of the Remington Arms - Union Metallic Cartridge Co. catalogues I have (1913-14, 1915-16, 1918-19 and a seperated catalogue of advertising) show what the "Steel Lined" is. My gut feeling is it is an interior reinforcement of the head, not that the shell is all steel lined. The "Steel Lined" is gone by the 1923 Remington Arms Co., Inc. catalogue.

Western Cartridge Co. used the terms "Locked with Steel" or "Steel Locked" and show this as an interior reinforcement of the head and rim with prongs that lock the basewad in place.

Peters Cartridge Co. used the phrase "Steel Where Steel Belongs" on their shot shells, which in their cutaways shows an interior steel reinforcement of the rim and primer pocket.

Going over some of my American Fields last night, while looking for something, and I spotted these two adverts in consecutive issues.

First one on the front page of the October 8, 1910 issue... Winchester's advert extolling the virtues of modern American ideas, i.e., its "corrugated head" that doesn't have a metal ining. Also stating that metal lining was once used in Winchester shotshells but was discarded long ago.

Second one by UMC/Remington, on front page of the October 15 issue, states that steel lining as used in their brand shotshells has proven its indisputable superiority and that steel lining is employed by all the best shell makers in Europe.

Same stuff we're exposed to today with shell manufacturers claiming superiority of this/that in their products. Silvers
