Was there ever a 28 gauge Fox?

Post by ROMAC »

I have an entire set of Double Gun Journals and I never stop reading them. I literally read them in order one after the other. It takes me about 2 years to finish the entire set. Last night I was reading one of the early ones from 92 or 93 and in one of the full page ads was an advert for a "extremely rare" Fox in 28 gauge.

I do not ever remember ever hearing about one, even if it was experimental. I wish I had thought to write it all down exactly as it was posted. I will do that tonight but I'm throwing this out there. Does anyone have anything about this one way or the other?

I looked at a 28 gauge non-Tony Fox while at this years Vintage Cup, that was put together using a 20 gauge NOS Fox barrel set. Apparently the Fox rough chambering dimensions for 20 were a tad bit under 28 gauge chamber sizing. I presume a 28 gauge chamber reamer was used to finish it up. Basically it was a 28 gauge gun with 20 gauge overbores. The owner who is a capable gunsmith told me it worked well and broke targets, no different than modern shooters using chamber-mates and similar to shoot 20 gauge shells from 12 gauge guns, etc. Now then... I don't know if the '92-93 advert was for something similar... or not.

Just an example of the show & tell Foxes you'll see when at the larger S x S events. Besides those coming in for trade/sale. :D Silvers

McIntosh mentions a couple of Savage-era multi-barrel sets that included a set of unchambered 20-gauge barrels with 28-gauge rim cuts. Probably done after-market by someone like Mitzie.

I believe the late John Mann had a 28 gauge built up for his grandsons using a set of unchambered 20 gauge barrels. It could be that is the gun you saw or there may be more than one floating around.

I bought an AE-Grade gun from John Mann with a set of 28ga,20ga & 16ga barrels to make it a three barrel/gauge set. The gun itself was in pretty rough shape & I ended up parting it out. The 28ga barrels were unchambered 20ga barrels that were rim cut for 28ga.

28ga shells fit nicely in the chambers, but it was odd to look down the bores and see no forcing cones or other constrictions, just a straight bore. I have since sold these barrels to one of the members here that does quite a bit of his own work on Foxes.

I also know of another set of these barrels that a friend owns. I assume there may be several sets floating around.

Cooincidently, one of the internet gun sale sights just put one up for sale as part of a pricey XE combo set.

several years ago, I talked to a guy who I think was in KS that had several sets of barrels in the white that could have been bored out for 28 gauge... they had come from Mitzie and Roe who sold off a big stack of whatever Savage had left over from Fox sometime in the 70s or 80s. Apparently there were quite a few sets of barrels in the white around at one time.
Cheers!
