Endless Mtns Side by Side - August 18 & 19

Post by Silvers »

I’d like to remind everyone of the upcoming Endless Mountains Side by Side shoot that will be held on August 18 & 19. This is not an official AHFCA sponsored event, however many Fox shooters participate along with our Parker, LC Smith etc comrades. I have no personal financial interest in this event; I like to shoot and am just passing the word.

The competition is 50 birds at Hidden Hollow, and 50 at Rock Mountain Sporting Clays = 100 birds for each gauge you wish to shoot. Both clubs are in northeastern Pennsylvania. Hidden Hollow is well known as the location for the Great NE Side by Side Event, held annually in June. Those who've shot Hidden Hollow before know that a good part of its course is set for quick grouse type targets, Ernie's specialty. See Events tab on Hidden Hollow's website which is here:

http://www.hhhsc.net/

For those not familiar with Rock Mountain, the club is nearby and it recently hosted the 2012 PA SC Championship. Rock Mountain is more of a conventional sporting clays course, and owner Mike sets really good targets that aren't eye tests. I am including some pics of Rock Mountain taken during the Pennsylvania State SC Championship earlier this month.

The Side by Side combo shoot is August 18 & 19. Or, I should say the 18th OR the 19th. You can shoot both courses in one day and in fact, that's what many shooters do. The two clubs are about 25 minutes or so apart.

Here’s a chance for a wonderful day or days out with the Side by Sides and our friends. I have a family commitment on Sunday, thus I’ll shoot both courses on Saturday. Any Foxers who wants to link up with me…. be at Hausmann’s Hidden Hollow for coffee and breakfast goodies by 9:30am on Saturday, August 18. I'll be doing HH first, then go over to Rock Mountain.

Frank,

I can't make another trip back east this year so I hope that you will pull camera duty and photograph all those fine Fox guns and their noble shooters in those magestic endless mountains of Pennsylvania!

Patiently awaiting your photos,
Mark :D

Mark, we will miss you. I'll do my best to get some pics but I'm shooting for score, probably two gauges, and will be focusing on the shooting and targets. Hopefully we'll get a large number of Fox guys and gals there, and others will step up to do some posting too. Frank

Nice day today. First day of the event and about 30 shooters started out at Hidden Hollow this morning. I may have missed someone but there were only two Fox guys in the early gang (Dick B and myself). Dick kicked off with a Syracuse Lefever, and mine was the only Fox I saw. :( There were other shooters who started at Rock Mtn, and we missed each other in the move from club to club.

I shot a 32 incher I call "PB" and did well at both clubs, but we'll see what happens when all the scores are in, at end of the day on Sunday. Neat.... today's last station #9 at Hausmann's was where we shoot our Bo-Whoop Long Range targets. Menu was a two shot single at the high bird from our B-W this past June; and it seems my wiggles compensated for my wobbles and I broke both with the second shot. "PB" is choked .044" in her left tube. 8)

Sorry, no pics at Hausmann's Mad Jack field; the guys were banging away there too. I won't be shooting tomorrow so these are all the pics I'll have. Silvers

SOME SUNDAY PICS ADDED BELOW. I was able to get a 4 hour pass to do more shooting today, so I joined up with a gang that was at Rock Mtn shooting the last half of the 10 and 12 gauge events. Dick B told me that he shot a Fox on the 16 gauge course, so that makes two that I know of.

Hi Frank,

Thanks for the photos! I saw some familier faces and poodles  One has to love Robert's pair of Standard "Hunting" Poodles!

Got a 4 hour pass for more shooting today so I went back to Rock Mtn to do the second 50 birds again - just for practice, not score. I hooked up with some other SxS shooters doing the Endless SxS and shot a 12 gauge Ithaca NID just for something different.

To answer Jess's question, "PB" is a custom Fox reportedly assembed/owned by a gent who (per his grandson) "worked at a gunsmithing shop in Philadelphia" some 80 years ago. She has a D Grade straight grip stock, flat/thin BT forend with matching D checkering, frame has A grade engraving but isn't grade stamped. She also has 32-inch C Grade barrels that have slight overbores and a .002" "swell" leading into both chokes. Chokes are .030" and .044". Oh yeah, she has a Becker-style safety button. You can make your own conclusions on "PB". I shot spreaders at many of the grouse targets at Hausmanns, but none at Rock Mtn. 'PB" had some small issues when I got her but they've since been corrected.

PB is a very nice looking gun. Killer wood! The rib appears to be a raised flat top?

Thanks for posting all the photos.

Good eyes Mike. The barrel was ordered with a "straight rib" and has very little swamp from breech to muzzle. Its original customer also requested at least 75% patterns and to "send patterns" with the gun. Somehow this barrel came together with the other parts at the gunsmithing shop in Phila. Frame, buttstock, barrels, trigger guard, forend iron and latch plate all came from 6 different guns; the shop must have had access to a lot of Fox parts. The Beavertail is not standard Fox and was undoubtedly made up when the gun was assembled. I also believe the barrel bores and chokes were also massaged at that time. I want to add here that my late friend Russ Bickel helped me sort out this gun.

This is not a stealthy For Sale advert. Gun isn't for sale. However if anyone has any more questions on my PB please ask them on the Members Forum. This thread is way off on a tangent.
