Kautzky trigger question

Post by ROMAC »

One of the biggest issueswith my new to me XE is the short length of pull.

The Kautzky single trigger is in the back trigger spot and makes the LOP feel shorter than it is. I though that that was just the way it was, is and forever shall be but in reading everything I can about it I found a reference to an XE for sale with "the Kautzky trigger in the desireable middle position"

So my question is this: Did the Kautzky come with options for the back, middle and front positions? Were they interchangable? Can you add LOP by switching a back position trigger to a front or middle position trigger? I have never seen a discussion on this so I thought I'd throw it out there to the experts.

Does anyone have any information to share on this issue?

The only way to change LOP is change the length of the stock. Changing the trigger position only changes the point of measurement. The Kautzky single trigger was available in the back, middle and front positions. The trigger for each position is different in shape and a different part. You could have a knowledgeable gunsmith change out the trigger to one designed for the front position, finding and fitting the part would be a challenge------but it is certainly doable. The only thing it will do is change the position of your right hand a little.

If I measure the LOP with the trigger in the back position then change out the Kautzky trigger to a front position trigger and then remeasure the LOP and it comes out longer do I win a quarter from you? LOL!! :D :D

The LOP is 13 1/8th to the end of the collapsed hardened
Silver pad. Simply replacing the pad with a extra thick one might get me to about 13 3/4's. Adding to the issue is that I'm 6'3" and wear a 46 Long suit jacket.

I do not want to go to the expense of restocking it and the thought of an extension is less than desireable.

Yeah, I see the problem....you had just better sell it to me.

I personally would definately not change thing. What I would do is get on of those nice leather slip on/wrap around pads that will extend your LOP and frig up nothing. If you were lucky enough to find a front position trigger I see no percentage in opening the gun up to fit it and trying to change things around on a SST that is working now may be a task.... but that's me.

How about one of these?

I have one on a short stocked hammer gun. Works well, looks good, easy to install/remove.

I already have a leather one that uses a velcro fastener. It is still to short.

99% of Fox stocks measure 14 1/8" LOP from the front trigger, If you replace the standard butt plate with a real new Silvers pad (7/8" thick) it will result in 14 5/8" LOP.
Sounds like you are looking for 15 1/2" plus or minus LOP which will be next to impossible to find in a original vintage Fox. Many of our members re-stock Foxes to there requirements. If you want to shoot a Fox I would explore the re-stocking option. I would sell the XE as a collector gun and use the funds to restock your B to the proper dimensions, the B is already had the chambers lengthened by Savage. Just a thought and you would have $'s left over. Craig

I'm going from memory so I'm going to recheck everything tonight.

My B, A & PAC gun all fit me fine with a slip on pad. The XE is just extra short. That coupled with the Kautzky in the rear slot makes it seem even shorter. I'm going to see Craig Libhart this Frida to discuss my otions on all of them.

Here is a picture which shows the LOP.

It is too short to just slip on a pad. I'm having Craig look at it Friday to go over the head to make sure the wood is sound and shootable. We will be discussing options but I'm in no hurry to have anything done to it. I'm hoping to get it cleaned, oiled and ready for dove season.

If you are hell bent on shooting this gun why don't you install a Galazan long period correct pad? If it is still too short with the long pad simply add additional spacers between the stock and the pad. It won't win any beauty contests but it will get it to your dimensions without the expense of a new stock and without messing with the originality of the current stock.

Thanks forthe info. I am aware of the Galazan pads, if I were to put one on without additional spacers (for aesthetics) I could probably get away with a leather slip on over it.

Anyway, I got my serial number lookup and the information was spot on. 13" to end of the silvers pad, 30 inch barrels F/F. What was interesting was that the gun was shipped to "ES Applegate, P&CEO".

ES Applegate was the president & CEO of ES Applegate & Co. located at 17 South Broad Street in Trenton NJ which is just across the Delaware river from where I bought the gun in PA. I have no way of knowing if it was for him pesonally or if it was for the store. (I still have not been able to get the name of the seller) I was able to find out that it was a very large sporting goods store that advertised itself as the largest in the state at the time.

Where it gets really interesting for me is that I was born and raised on South Broad Street just outside ofthe city limits of Trenton just 16 city blocks from where this store was. I live across the river in PA now. This gun has never really made it out of my own neighborhood! Small world.

That is interesting. The gun must have been ordered for a man of small stature, a youth or perhaps a lady. However, I would think if it were for a youth or lady it would have been ordered in a smaller gauge but on the other hand women are quite capable of handling 12 gauge gun, some quite proficiently.

12 gauge, 13" LOP to a rear position Kautzky, 30" barrels choked F & F. All that spells ducks to me. For those who've never hunted with one, a rear/Kautzky is ideal in colder weather when gloves are worn. Silvers
