Events at the Southern SXS

Post by SmithShady »

I've been looking at the list of events/competitions for this coming weekend, and I'm trying to decide which one (if any) to participate in. I'm not a member of the LC Smith or Parker Associations, so that one is out for this year, but I know several people here have commented that they will be participating. What about the other events? Some of the small bore events looked like fun, the Holland & Holland Small gauge or the Connecticut Shotgun American Classics. I thought either of those in 16ga or 20ga could be fun. What events have you guys signed up for?

I'm not certain but I think you can sign up for the LCS and Parker Associations on site, and then go on to try at qualifying for the Challenge. If you don't have one or the other maker's gun, you can usually loan one for the shooting, with the signer uppers getting you set up with one. Besides the Challenge, the practice 5-stand may be shot with any SxS gun and that's usually pretty popular. A few years back I shot the course with a local gal and the stations were way backed up with shooters trying to shoot multiple events all on one pass through the one course. All we wanted to shoot was 12 gauge and it took forever, but fortunately she had her own golf cart so we sat and waited in the roof shade. I seem to have read that practice was restricted since then, but I don't know for sure. Probably worthwhile asking when you get there. For anyone staying to watch the Challenge match on Saturday, it's an OUTSTANDING event. Bring a folding chair with you. Silvers

New procedures this year for the Challenge. Tryouts for the two teams are scheduled, squads are mixed rather than alternated, and are to be shot, two thirty target rounds back to back, on two different 5-stands. This will limit practice quite a bit, but practice doesn't seem to be the key to a good showing in the tryout for some reason. I, for one, am looking forward to the new format.
