Fox AE Forend --- Original?

Post by Utah Shotgunner »

I have always thought that the beavertail on this gun was not original, and obviously the extension is not. At some point I posted pictures of it minus s/n and several folks commented that the work looked 'factory'. When I posted the s/n I was told that it was too early and could not be done by the factory. What say all of you? Original (minus extension)?

BTW - While not part of this question, the 'Miller' trigger is s/n'ed to the gun.

The "LB Hunt" Savage era Fox catalog shows a "Fox English Type Beavertail Forend" on a A grade. It is very different than your example. The checkering pattern and shape next to the forend metal is much different. My guess is you beavertail is not original.

In that the tips of the screws showing in the Deeley latch plate are not engraved, I'd say the beavertail was added after-market. Usually ejector guns done with a beavertail have a yoke inletted into the wood for the screw in from the rear of the forearm iron to go into. Actually Savage used the yoke on a lot of their ejector guns even without beavertails.

Researcher,

The screws are replacements, at least one for sure.

The friend who had possession for the last few years was shooting it in the 'Pigeon Ring' at the U.P. SxS Shoot and the screws snapped. Further investigation turned up punky, oil soaked wood. New screw(s) were made and installed with replacement wood (inletted) when the gun was repaired.

The rear portion of the fore end is without question factory Fox, IMHO. The shaping and the grooves in the rib channel are the giveaways.Miller triggers are often serialed to the gun. PA trap and pigeon shooters are often associated with Miller trigger simply because Elmer and his sons, Howard and Delbert frequented shoots major and minor in their home state for 75 years and sold a lot of trigger there.

Don,

The items you mention are what others have told me, made them think it was 'factory' and why I posed the question.

I hadn't logged in for a long time.

I thought I'd bring this back to the top for any new thoughts.

Thanks!
