Weight Question

Post by Sam Ogle »

Where does one look for the weight on a Fox? Is it stamped on the barrels?

Not all barrels have the stamp visible, sometimes it was struck off during fitting. If it is there the stamp will be on the under side of the barrels just in front of the flats.
It will be a single number starting at 0 and as high as 4 with 4 being the lightest.
If you find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck

Thanks Scott.
I expect every Fox collector knows this, but I didn't know it, and a man once told me after looking at my barrels at the Gunsmiths, that they were "the heaviest barrels" (If I remember his quote exactly) he had seen on a Sterlingworth 16 gauge.
The man, who is very knowledgable, either "read" the weight, or weighed the barrels, and I just assumed he read it on the gun, so, I decided it had to be marked on the barrels somewhere.
Thanks again,

Sam if you have access to a very accurate scale that will weigh to the ounce post the weight along with gauge and barrel length and one of with with access to McIntosh's book will tell you what the book says the weight number (0 -4) is.

Thanks so much. Right now, I don't have access to the gun. It is being engraved, so my question was asked without the gun to verify things with. I will more than happily weigh the gun when I get it back. I DO remember that it weighed in total 6# 2oz.
And, that it is a 16 gauge 30" barrels with ejectors
And, I remember that when I sent it off to gunsmith and engraver land over two years ago, (nearing three) that I didn't think it would take this long.
I am patient. But, dang, I am 70, and pray the legs are still good this fall (and that I have the gun to show off and to shoot)

Sam, if this is the 30" SW I saw at PGS several years ago - yes they're the heaviest 30 inch 16 gauge barrels I have hefted. Actually the gun was still assembled when I saw it on a rack. One of the guys gave me permission to check it out and I did some swinging on imaginary birds, and came up with that conclusion. I didn't break it apart to look at the bottom of the barrels. But If the gun you're talking about here weighs 6-2, that sounds like a different one than the one I hefted. I was shooting a 16 SW with 28" tubes on Sunday. It weighs 6-1 and felt like a buggy whip. Maybe I picked up someone else's 16 SW while at the gunsmith? Silvers

Sam this is a SWAG but 6 lbs 2 oz for a 16 gauge with 30 inch barrels is on the light side. Of course there are a number of factors that effect overall gun weight, primarily, density of the wood in the stock but as a point of reference I have a 16 gauge Sterlingworth with 30 inch barrels with extractor that weighs 6 lbs 4 ounces, the barrels are not marked but weigh 3 lbs, 5 ounces which puts them in the #4 barrel weight range.

Sounds like a nice bird gun to me.

Sorry can't do anything about speeding up your engraver. Hopefully you will have it in hand for bird season.

My 30-inch barrel A-Grade 16-gauge with straight grip stock, Jostam Anti-Flinch pad and a beavertail weighs 6 pounds 14.5 ounces. My 30-inch barrel AE-Grade 20-gauge with half-pistol grip weighs 6 pounds 7.9 ounces.

Silvers;
Yes, it's the gun. It has been at the Gunsmiths and engravers that long. Long story: They had an engraver they sent it to, and he didn't do anything for 6-8 months. Found out he was going through a divorce, and so the 'smiths got the gun back, and this time, I sent it to Ken Hurst. Then, Ken's wife died, Ken got sick, and so the gun has been at his place for over a year.

Anyway, at Skeet, I shot the gun well because of the weight, but this morning I was musing, and wondered if, when you had seen the gun you saw some mark that indicated weight.
It may be a bit on the barrel heavy side, but I had the new stock made for it, and before long had sent it off to the Gunsmiths, so I never took it hunting. With the replacement stock and fore end, I am not sure what it weighs now, but before I began, it weighed on a very good scale, the 6#2oz.

Thanks for your information, and God willing, one day I will see my prize.

Sam, sorry to hear of your ongoing delays. I don't know what to say. The 30" SW I looked at that day definitely had heavy barrels. I distinctly remember the three of us who were there, hefting the gun and commenting about its barrel weight and swing. They did have a rack of guns over the workbench, along with more in the open safe. Whatever I had in my hands that day - it wasn't a 6-2 gun. Frank

Just checked. My 30" 16 Gauge SW (with ejectors) tips the scales at 6 lb 10 oz. Surprised it weighs that to be honest. Nice swinging dove gun.

In my experience, very few gun owners own good scales, very few gunsmiths keep customers guns out of the hands of visitors, very few engravers work on your schedule. Shame on the lot of you. Just kidding, of course, I think.
