Question about Sterlingworth reciever finish

Post by ROMAC »

I have two Sterlingworths that both have a subtle yet distinct change in the finish on both cheeks of the receiver. When I read Hutch5252's post earlier in the "Pictures of Your Sterlingworth's" section I saw the same contrast/shading on his second and third pictures as mine have. It is not very noticeable at all untill you look for it. I just always assumed it was the way they buffed the metal before case coloring at the factory, but that is just my SWAG. I can not recall it ever being discussed here. Does anyone out there have a factual explanation?

One of mine:

My SWs have the same "two tone" effect on the receiver and I have always chalked it up to the way the receivers were held against the polishing wheels.

My 12ga Sterly has a very distinct line such as you're referring to; my 16ga and 20ga not so much (if at all). I kinda wondered why, but never enough to try to find out :) .
