Butt plate

Post by Ithaca33 »

I purchased a reProducion butt plate for my sterlingworth from gala an and it arrived yesterday. I'm sorry to say it doesn't fit....at all. I know they leave it "a bit oversized" so you can sand it down for a perfect fit but if I line up the screw holes it's not tall enough on top and there is more than an inch to be trimmed off on bottom. In the receipt it states that "butt plates may not be returned" as if they know it doesn't fit in the first place.

At this point i think ill search for a true period replacement. Does anyone have a butt plate to fit a late 30's 12ga sterly I could purchase?

Cheers

I know Parkers and assume Foxes had different size buttplates. The twelve bore guns tended to have a butt with more area than the 20s. You might look back at Galazans and see if they have different sizes.

Best,

Mike is correct. You may have received a smallbore plate that has the screw holes closer together. Bobby

It states that it is a 12 on the receipt and th holes aren't completely misaligned just not centered on the holes. I may just leave it without a plate honestly

Galazan makes mistakes...I ordered a replacement buttplate for 12-ga. Parker Trojan from Galazan. Galazan has two sizes listed on their website, I ordered their product number that corresponds to the buttplate intended for the 2-frame 12-ga. Trojan stock. It was delivered in a package that had the correct product number on it, but the contents were for an 0-frame stock. Even though they said "all sales are final" I called them and explained the problem, they said send it back as it was their mistake. They sent a new one out and guess what? Same thing--I received the wrong one again! I called again and explained again what was going on. I sent it back and this time someone from Galazan actually measured and verified it was the correct buttplate before sending it out again. The moral of the story is that it sounds that something similar is going on with your order.

I live 45 min from them and saw in Shooting sportsman today that they recently opened an amazing showroom full of vintage doubles and their products....I think a visit with my gun may be in order :-)

Butt plates normally have to be fitted. When these guns were made they were hand crafted with lots of labor and fine workman ship. I have never found an exact fit on a replace butt plate, close fits but never exact, maybe I shop in the wrong places. lol

Also ordered the Galazan BP on sale and was very disappointed, didn't like the material, feel, or even the smell when sanding (sizing). I have order from Vintage Gun Grips and like their product, cost, and service much better.

To my surprise I found the Stevens Shotgun Buttplate no logo a better fit and the holes lined up, so this is not an exact science. You may want to send (fax) them a tracing with hole spacing if possible.

Good luck I hope this is helpful.

The links you gave in your above pot are very interesting. In the clearance section there is a supposedly reproduction A.H. Fox RED buttplate, copy of a 1912 buttplate. I've never heard of or seen an original like this. What have I missed out on?

No Fox Gun collection would ever be complete without having at least one of the approximate 23 different colors of plastic butt plates that vintagegungrips.net offers. "Yessirree sir, step right up, we've got red, we've got hot pink, we've got royal blue and an array of other colors, what color would you like?" :P

The red BP is new to me and never noticed it. I would assume "Hot Pink" would be used on the girls cut down stock 20 ga Sterlingworths I run into. LOL
