Varnished?

Post by basehorfarm »

The AE grade I purchased has what looks like varnish over the barrels and reciever. I have seen this on many old guns while trying to find the perfect SxS. Is this a varnish? Is there anyway to safely remove it without hurting the finish?

Does it appear brushed on?

They did a pretty good job, but yes there are a few areas that show imperfections, like it was brushed or sprayed. Small air bubbles maybe.

I would try a little MEK on a Q-tip to see if it comes off. Be VERY careful MEK will act as a solvent on the wood finish. Go very slow.

Thanks, Methyl Ethyl Ketone is good stuff. This won't hurt the color case hardening or the Ivory beads will it?

MEK won't effect CC, not sure about ivory. Go very slow and be very careful of the wood finish.

I don't think MEK will hurt the ivory beads but I would minimise contact in case MEK could swell the ivory. It certainly will remove any sealant on the ivory and at that time you may wish to clean the ivory with mild soap and water. Reseal it with wax.
