ATTENTION: Fox SBT owners

Post by Silvers »

Gents,
I’m doing some research on A H Fox J-Grade Single Barrel Trap (SBT) guns, and I’m asking for your kind help with this survey.

Please look at the macro pictures included here, and compare with your gun(s). I’m mainly interested in Fox J Grade SBT guns, not Fox K, L, or M Grade guns.

First two pictures are of the engraving on the back end of the barrel breech. Does your J-Grade Fox look like A or B?

The second set of pics show the matting or stippling on the breech end of the barrel rib. Does your Fox J-Grade's rib look like C or D?

Please reply here, or by PM to me if you don't want to do a public post. Let me know if it's A or B, and if it's C or D, also your gun's serial number if you are OK with that. I will, of course, give credit to all contributors as this research goes forward. Thanks very much for your time. I really appreciate it.

Thanks to everyone who replied so far. Here's another J-Grade with the B style breech engraving, and D type rib stippling. Serial no 40008x. Pic was supplied by a good friend, and I'm including it here with his permission.

J Grade owners..... all I need is a reply here or a PM to me, with the details on your gun. Pic is optional. :) Frank

Barthmaier,

Sorry for the delay. Looked over my two J's. Ser# 400106, strangely enough, has no barrel wedge engraving at all, with the D version stippling. Ser.# 400282 has the B & D patterns you illustrated. I'll send you some pics of the variation on the forearm checkering, that we spoke about last week. I'm dead nuts sure both guns are in factory-original condition.
Looking forward to your continued reports from the partridge front!!!!!

Regards,

Ad Roll

Thank You Mr. Roll, I'm happy you brought the thread back to the top.

Still looking for kind replies from anyone with J-Grade SBT guns, to include additional guns I know are in the hands of Eightbore, Marshfellow, Sfcmosteller. I seem to remember that Researcher has one too..... ?

Thanks again to all for your efforts. F J Barthmaier

B and C, 400,176. Can someone post a picture of the joint between the breech section of the rib and the front section? Do we think they are all the same?

Thank you Bill. Here ya go on the pic. I'm pretty sure all Fox SBT's have the same design with a fixed (pin) attachment at the breech end; and all other barrel standoffs including the one at the muzzle, have a sliding/heat expansion design.

For interested members, there are many additional pics of the Fox SBT rib design & repair in one of my "Foxsmithing" threads from this past spring, on the Members Forum.

Would anyone who has a different Fox SBT rear rib attachment setup, please respond here? A macro pic would be most helpful. Thanks. Silvers aka "Barthmaier"

Frank, first congratulations on your great Double Gun Journal article that I received yesterday, November 29. Next, today I got #400,104 in the mail. It has B and C, just like my #400,176. Odd that #400,106 is different from #400,104, Must have been two engravers employed, each with a different cue card for J Grade engraving.

Dave, that sure is a high number. Is it a Savage gun? Who owns #400,568. Three grand seemed like a high price when Randy Shuman had it.

Thank you Bill et al. All this is research for a manuscript I have on the back burner, based on a J Grade that seems to have been consigned/delivered/whatever in 1914. That was 5 years before the Fox SBT was actually introduced to the trade. Yep I know some of you think I'm nuts. I've got the start of a story on this J Grade but have another Foxy one in the works that I'd like to complete first. Silvers

Bill, yes, 400543 is a Savage gun. Card is missing. The day I bought it from old Voss from Yorktown at the Mechanicsville Gunshow, he only had two guns on his table, the other was a DEO-Grade Remington that as I recall was restocked by Leonard Mews (sp). I didn't have the money for both!!

400568 is the only single I've seen with the top of the frame/barrel milled out concave on each side of the rib line as Savage described in their Trap Gun brochure
