Rare? Fox old BE grade 12 gauge- Need help!

Post by stillwater562 »

I just aquired a Ansley H Fox 12g, (29 inch barrels - best as I can tell) from what I can figure out its the old BE grade shotgun, it has the engraving on it with what appears to be little ducks/waterfowl on each side, it has a low serial 15144 which I think is 1910 but I though some experts on these guns could give me some much needed info, as far as I can tell it says these to be scarce I am just wondering how many were made and exactly how scarce is it, Thanks a lot

You have what collectors refer to as a first generation B grade. The engraving styles changed in 1913 and the B grade was significantly upgraded. My guess is the barrels have been cut if they measure 29", they most likely left the factory as 30". Factory records do not exist for the first 10000 guns so it is unknown the precise number of early style B's. My estimate is approximately 2150. Most collectors would not consider the early B a rare gun. They are a very nice looking gun with excellent workmanship. Congratulations on your purchase.

the barrels are probably 30' I was just guesstimating, the ivory color bead sites are still there, it appears to be in nice condition, it is pretty old, I added pics so I might get a better assesment of this gun, I don't think its been shot very much the barrels (Bores) are beautiful, like glass, there are a few dark spots on the reciever to where it was starting to rust but was caught before it got really bad. I would like for somebody that deals in these to give me an estimated value on this one for practical sales and insurance estimates if possible, I know its kinda hard not having the gun in hand but anything would help at this point. Any feedback is appreciated -

$800-$1000. It appears the barrels have been re-blued and the action has been highly polished, both negatively affect the value as a collector item.
It appears to be a solid gun which can be shot and enjoyed, but it has no original condition hence the value estimate.
