The recent DGJ and Shooting Sportsman both have articles on HE foxes. Reseacher got a nice nod in the DGJ article. It has been a while since there has been much published about Foxes. Hopefully they will get more people interested in these fine firearms-John

For a newbie, does anyone have a listing of DGJ (or other) articles which are good references for Fox guns? I'm just beginning my research. My Fox Sterlingworth is from my great-grandfather, SN 538XX, which I believe places it in its first year of production, 1910. By the way, while I'm at it, can anyone tell me what the correct recoil pad would have been for this gun? It lacks one right now.... :)

Billspeer,

My suggestion would be that you buy a copy of the DGJ reference books as they will list all journals with articles on the Fox gun. If i was home, I would post the info for ya but the books are worth owning. So is a complete set of the DGJs.

As for but pad... it would not have a pad, it would have had a plate... you can order replacement plates from CSMC amongst others. You might need a pad to give you a LOP that is usable depending on your height and fit and most would recommend a Silvers or Silvers reproduction pad for this era.
Cheers!

A Silvers Pad was offered as a $5 option during the first years of the Sterlingworth's availability. The Jostam Anti-Flinch pad, most common on lower graded Fox guns didn't come along until just before WW-I.

Researcher:

Just the info I was seeking on the pad. Any suggestion of which of the several Silvers varieties available would be appropriate?
Thanks, Bill Speer

Researcher at one time posted a "Fox bibliography". Maybe he would do it again.

"History of the A.H. Fox Gun Co.", by M.H. Wright, (Twelfth Article of the Series), Field & Stream, October 1908.

"The Shotguns of Ainsley (sic) H. Fox", by Mason Williams, Guns & Ammo, January 1973.

"Burt Becker's Magnum Force", by Jim C. Cobb, American Shotgunner, March 1984.

"Ansley H. Fox", by Michael McIntosh, Sporting Classics, September/October 1985.

McIntosh's Firearms column in Sporting Classics, November/December 1985, "Burt Becker"; March/April 1986, "Ansley H. Fox's shooting career".

"The Ansley H. Fox Gun", by Don Hardin, Gun Digest, 40th Edition, 1986.

"SUPER-FOX: The Waterfowling Legend", by Michael McIntosh, American Rifleman, August 1987.

"The Finest Gun in the World", by Michael McIntosh, Shooting Sportsman, May 1988.

All these articles are dated. There is probably better information on our web site. We are on our spring migration to Kodiak, and my The Double Gun Journal Fox article table is not on the lap top we have with us. Clear blue sky and sunshine here at Tok, Alaska, this morning.

Dave I found your The Double Gun Journal Fox article table in the AHFCA Member's forum . Would you like me to copy and post it here?

Best,

Mike
