CE Grade Quail Gun

Post by waterman »

I wanted to show some pictures of this little guy. It is a CE Grade 26 inch barrels IC/M, shipped 12/12/1925. I want some guys to look at the engraving on the barrel wedges. Looks like X to me, but not for sure. The factory letter says while the gun was at the factory something went wrong with the barrels and a new set was put on it in June 1925 then shipped the following December. It must have been a great Christmas Present.

Thanks,

Donnie

That's a beaut, Donnie. I'll leave the question on the barrel wedges to the more knowledgeable. You're right, I'll bet Mr. Crosby was very pleased with that Christmas present. Thanks for posting.

What does she weigh?

This may be a grouse gun. Shipped to Haverford, PA, just a baseball throw from the factory. Some of them never get far from home. Proctor and Schwartz was not a sporting goods concern, so Mr. Crosby may have been an employee or officer at the company. What are Mr. Crosby's initials? I can't read them in the picture. Thanks for all the good info and pictures, Donnie.

Donnie: Is the patent information stamped on the forend metal. It appears blank?? I have a Fox from the same era without the stamps on the forend metal. The forend stamp must have been in the toolroom for repair.
I find it amazing how the CC wears from gun to gun and place to place. Look at the trigger plate on your gun it has about 100% color and the action bottom looks silver. It must have been the CC process varied and resulted in the CC being more durable on some parts. Dewey Vicknair told me he felt that the metal grain in the forging held the CC better in some areas than others. Craig

FWIW, I noticed years ago that some ejector Foxes don't have the patent dates stamped in the f/e iron, and others have remnants of the patent dates - where they were obviously (more or less) filed or struck off. I believe this happened in the final fitting of the forend on individual guns. The f/e iron must fit flush in its inlet in the forend wood, and the forend must fit tightly against the barrel contours. And the f/e latch must fit tightly against the undersurface of the barrel lug.

Net, I believe that f/e irons showing no patent dates, or partially removed patent dates, were the result of accumulated tolerances, and something had to give in the fitting process. It perhaps was easiest to dress off the top surface of the f/e iron, where the patent dates are stamped, if the f/e metal ended up proud of the wood. Of course that was before case hardening or bluing of the f/e iron. Silvers
