Help on Identifying Gun

Post by IMSports007 »

I was left a gun in a will from my grandfather. He was born and raised in Virginia. I've attached a picture. The gun has the serial # 296# and is a double barrel shotgun. It looks like an "A" model?

Any ideas on where I can identify more info on the gun?

Also on the inside, it's stamped "Krupp fluid steel made by A.H. Fox Gun Co. Phila, PA

On the barrell, it says, "Fluid Steel Krupp Lightweight Barrel"

Under patent info, it has" Pat'd Aug 1 1905 Oct .17, 1905 - Jan 16, 1906"

It says Ansley H. Fox on the side.

Thanks in advance!

Michael

Michael: I would order a research letter from Mr. Callahan on your gun. that will tell you a lot and also who the gun was shipped to from Fox.

Best Regards, George

There are no records for a gun that early. I've never seen a gun with Krupp "lightweight barrels". Would like to see some close up photos of all these markings. I've seen several early Ansley H. Fox 12-gauge doubles with Krupp "heavyweight barrels".

Send then to AHFCA@comcast.net

My bit in the upcoming issue of the A.H. Fox Collectors Association Newsletter covers the first couple of years of the A.H. Fox Gun Co. The time frame when your gun was made.

Thanks

Michael sent me some pictures, and it appears he has an interesting old gun. It is certainly a 1906 vintage gun as shown by the Patent Date markings --

It appears to my eyes that the gun was back to the factory, probably in the 1920s, and got a Fox-Kautzky single selective trigger and very possibly the beavertail forearm. Neither were available in 1906.

I'd like to see several more good pictures of the beavertail forearm, inside and out, before we make a call as to whether it is factory work or not.

Beavertail is the large flat forearm that resembles a Beaver's tail that wraps part of the way around the barrels as opposed to a splinter forearm which is much narrower.

I'm going to vote that the beavertail forearm wood is not factory work based on the screws. I've not seen those rounded-head screws in a Fox forearm before.

Hey, a three digit Fox with a Kautsky trigger is an interesting gun, regardless of a blacksmith forend. Great old gun.
