Sterlingworth 12 ga 2 barrel set photos added

Post by Brian »

Picked up a Sterlingworth 2 barrel set,12 ga. with 2 matching forends, all numbered. Philly gun.
will have some pics soon. Waiting on Callahan letter.

My measurements indicate the following:
A.H. Fox Sterlingworth 12 Ga 2 barrel set. SN 66XXX. MFG 1914 in Philadelphia, PA.
Matching fore-end and barrels marked #1 and #2. Both barrels are 28” long. Weight of gun is 6 lbs 15 oz. with barrel # 1 and 6 lbs 14.5 oz. with Barrel #2. These were matched perfectly at factory for weight. #1 barrels marked #3 weight. Both barrels have 95% original blue in excellent condition.
Barrel specifications: #1 Bores R-.724” L-.723”.Chokes R-..008” L- .010” (IC & SKII) barrel #2 bores R-.722, L-.724”. chokes R-.008” L-.022” ( IC and IMP MOD) all chokes have at least 4” of taper. 2 5/8” chambers (original)
LOP 14 1/8”, Drop 1 ½” x 3”. Original butt-plate. Excellent bores. I would speculate that the owner had one set opened up for skeet and the other for hunting.

the letter shows 28" barrels, shipped Aug 1914.
Coorect stock dimensions, but barrels are choked M&F. so these were opened up.

The original set of barrels has the J.C. Kremer & A.H. Fox Patent No. 1,029,374 style forearm fastening while the second set has the F.T. Russell Patent No. 1,029,229 style.

I saw that. I am waiting for the letter. from what I know, normally if a gun is sent back for second set of barrels, they didnt number the first set. Is that true or would they have numbered both?

In my experience, when a gun left the factory as a two barrel set both barrels and fe's were numbered 1 & 2. When a second set got added subsequently sometimes they are 1 & 2 but often times the 2nd set is just 2. I take this from experience of sets that I have owned/own.

Gun letters as a regular Sterlingworth. Gun most likley sent back for second set. looks all factory.
First set is correct to the letter at 28".

Brian: My Sterlingworth SN 103079 two barrel set lettered as a factory two barrel set, "Brush Ejector" 12 gauge and was shipped in 1925 to the Watkins Cottrell Company. It was made with 32 and 26 inch barrels each with it's own forearm.
