Opening weekend of Kansas pheasant season my son, grandson and 4 other young bucks. Took the A-Grade Fox but had the wrong barrels on it for blocking. I needed the XF/XF barrels. Still managed to get a limit on opening day - I used RST #6 copper 2.5" although the gal is chambered for 2.75". I keep these on hand anyway and it patterns great with the shorter shell. She's 98 years old...I'm 72...and she'll be going long after I'm gone. The old ranch house sets in the middle of 4200+ acres and was built after the original homesteaders moved out of the soddie before the dust bowl. All land and buildings are still in the original family. Happy hunting. Lee

Great photos Lee. Those old stone houses and barns will last forever if you keep a good roof on them. We have a bunch of old stone buildings around here that have lost their roofs and are starting to fall apart. Every-time I see one with a caved in or missing roof I get pangs of regret that another treasure of the Flint Hills is being lost.

Thanks for the great photos, I'm leaving for the "stone fence post" country myself in a few hours and this makes the hunting prospects look good. There was some traffic on the Smith board this week implying that there weren't that many birds this year but it looks like you and the boys found some.
That doesn't look like too much like Holton though.

That is a cool kick pad on the gun. I am going to have one of those put on my super fox that has a crushed Silvers now. Does anyone know how the get the kick pads to turn dark? I have heard used oil. Donnie

Donnie, I have used Tru Oil to darken a CSMC repop NoShoc pad. It looked like a big # 2 pencil eraser when I put it on. Go light on the amount of each coating, rub in well, let dry for a couple of days between coats.

Fox Pheasant Fest 2011.....LOL. You're making this New Englander envious. My club stocks pheasant 30 minutes before shooting time, due to the swarm of predators, lurking about, waiting for an easy meal. The Redtails will line-up, like those Parker boys, at their annual meeting, buffet line. It's quite a spectacle. Half the time, our roosters still have the "Perdue" sticker attached. I know.....pretty damn poor excuse, for bird hunting.-------TOOL

Lee, great photos and lots of birds. What breed of dogs do you guys use for pheasant in Kansas? Our wild pheasant season opened last Saturday here in California. My black Lab, Mandy, and I took our limits both Saturday and Sunday on public ground.

Twice Barrel: I grew up in the Flint Hills as did my wife, both in Wabaunsee county. My great grandfathers house, built in 1868 is still standing and is still lived in. The walls are 2 feet thick and is cool in the summer and warm in winter. It was built next to a spring that shoots water out of a 2" pipe into a previouly stone, now concrete stock tank. Amen on the metal roofs. We had 3 labs, a short hair and my sons Lewellyn setter. Thats a good combination with the pointing and retrieving dogs in big grass and weed patches. The pad was put on the gun after 1912 when the second set of barreks was added, I don't know when. It is a Jostam Hy-Gun with patent dates of 1913,14, and 16 and is getting a little hard. The color is just plain "patina". I hate the thought of replacing it. Happy hunting all! Lee,
