My old Girl off topic

Post by fox-admin »

Here are a couple of pictures of my Old Girl Tess. 12 years young and still having fun. She has slowed down but still able to retrieve birds.
This may be her last hunt but still full of desire, ya got to love your old dogs. As Gene Hill wrote I wish I could talk to her for only one day.
The big mature drake mallard was wearing a band.

I know she's a great dog. Enjoy her and make sure she enjoys her last years. When my Ernie was 14 1/2 I took him and an older friend named Bob to game preserve for a mallard hunt. The birds were free to fly from pond to pond and weren't released. The hunting was almost like shooting wild birds except the blind was easy to get into. I didn't shoot and only served as guide and dog handler.

When Bob shot his first bird, I sent Ernie after it. Bob was worried that, at Ernie's advanced age, he wouldn't be able to make it back and fretted that the retrieve was too long. I told Bob that if Ernie died on that retrieve, I'd know he died doing what he loved. Bob almost cried when Ernie struggled back up the bank with his duck. Bob shot five ducks that day and Ernie retrieved every one. On the truck ride home, both fell asleep. I know it wasn't like hunting wild birds but it was the most rewarding duck hunt I've ever gone on.

Ernie died that May. Bob died last Thanksgiving. I thought about that hunt just this week. Savor the moments of your life and the company of your companions, you won't be here together forever. It does give me something to look forward to. I'm figuring there are some great marshes in heaven and I'm looking forward to hunting with Bob and Ernie again.

Hi Craig, your post is not off topic and is wonderful. I use all my Fox guns for hunting and I don't hunt without my black Lab, Mandy. Keep the hunting photos coming.
