Pheasant hunting shot size recommendation

Post by HardCash »

I have a Fox A grade with 30" barrels and choked LM and IM and I plan on purchasing some 2-1/2" RST shells from Classic Upland Supply.
What size shot do I need for South Dakota Pheasant ?

I personally like the copper plated 6's they offer. I got a turkey with this 2 1/2" load last spring at about 20 yds. Lee.

I've shot hundreds of Pheasants over the last 45 seasons with my old 1914 A-Grade bored improved cylinder and improved modified. I almost always have carried a #7 1/2 trap load in the right barrel and a Super-X type #6 in the left. A box of Super-X type #6 last a several years. That said, almost all were over pointing dogs, and it is extremely rare I would even take a shot over 35 yards

If you are hunting over close working pointing dogs 1 ounce of #7s in the first barrel and 1 1/8th ounce of plated #6 in the second.

If you are hunting with flushing dog or tramping through the corn in assault formation or blocking at the end of the field go up one size to 1 1/8th ounce of #6 in the first barrel and 1 1/8th ounce of #5s in the second barrel.

Wild pheasants are tough birds with an incredible will to live and a big ole tail out there to con you into shooting them in their tough old butt.

I'd use #7 in the LM and #5 in the IM.

Since I'll not be hunting over dogs and I don't like to carry two different shells, I order the #6s in the RST Paper.
Thanks to everyone for their advise.
