How long was savage in chicopee falls???

I have a Fox SW that has the barrels marked in chicopee falls. Anyone know anything?

Dug around and found this:

About 1946 all of Savage's manufacturing was moved to the Chicopee Falls location, then in September of 1981 the company moved all operations to Westfield, Massachusetts.

That should be 1961, not 1981, to Westfield.

Hrmm, musta been sent back to the factory at sometime, because the gun is serialed around 31!
will defantly take pics of barrel markings.

Savage actually acquired ownership of the old J. Stevens Arms & Tool Co. factories in Chicopee Falls immediately after WW-I. Savage operated these factories from WW-I to WW-II as the J. Stevens Arms Co., making Stevens, Riverside, Springfield, and numerous "trade brand" firearms there. By the mid-1930s, after Savage closed the old H&D Folsom Arms Co. factory in Norwich, Conn. where they had been making the Crescent and Davis shotguns, the final Crescent-Davis guns were also made at Chic Falls.

Over the years I've seen several Ansley H. Fox doubles that were rebarreled by Savage after they were at Chicopee Falls, and are so marked. After some point in time Savage adopted a policy that any Philadelphia Fox guns sent to them for repair would first have the barrels measured and if thick enough they would rechamber to 2 3/4 inch and then proof test at owners risk before they would complete any other repairs. If the barrels would not meet Savage's proof standards the gun would either be returned to the owner or new barrels fitted (at cost as a matter of customer good will), the old barrels destroyed and then other repairs completed.

thank you again researcher. Any idea what savage proofed the chicopee falls barrels at? Wouldn't they be better for a shooter?

no idea what pressure, but if they are early Philyl barrels that have been opened and proofed by Savage, they will likley be roll stamped 2 3/4 on the left barrel and will have an SP in an oval on the barrel flats.

What do you mean that the gun is serialed around 31... you mean 1931? That would be a Savage made gun already and would have the SP mark from the get go...

Asavage they are not arly philly barrels, they are replacements.
