Philadelphia Arms Gun #197

Post by ROMAC »

I know that a data base is being created for the these early Philadelphia Arms models so I wanted to share this information and offer pictures that can be used without reservation

This is a run of the mill A grade and the receiver may have been re-blued a long time ago. It looks kind of dark but it may not have been for that matter, I'm just not sure at this point.

Each side of the receiver says "Fox" and has light engraving typical of this model. The engraving is very fine and appears sharp.

It is a pistol gripped, 30 inch barreled extractor model with an ill fitting after market red head recoil pad.

Concave rib with "Philadelphia Arms Co. Makers Phila. PA Krupp Fluid Steel" engraved on it. Tha barrels, however are plain with no stampings whatsoever.

Water table has "Pat. August 16, 1904" on it.

Enjoy the pictures!

I've never seen one of these. What the heck is attached to the barrel flats... a self-opener spring?

I don't see what you are referring to, mike, on the flats.

Have you shared the info with Researcher?

Where did you find it?

I live outside of Philadelphia and mine turned up less than 6 miles from the factory where it was made. I'm always curious to see how far some of these old doubles traveled.

His shop is about an hour from me, mostly turnpike driving.

I'm also about an hour away, only from the opposite direction. I'm really looking forward to seeing the gun when Dewey's done with it.

it is an A grade, the barrell lenght is 26"(i believe they have been cut) they are still showing choke.it is pistol grip stock with 14" lop.it was purchased about 6 years ago at a yard sale, the condition was pretty rough much like #197 it had couple cracks in the stock and a good size chip of wood cracked off near the upper tag, wood was oil soaked in the usual places.the hard rubber butt plate was missing and looked like an old leather shoe sole was put in place!i have had the gun completley restored and still hunt with it on the new hampshire uplands(sunny days)that started my fox love affair!
i will post pics when i figure it out!
