Question about XE

Post by Scott L »

I have a friend who owns an XE 12 Gauge 2 barrel set that has been in his family for 2 generations. It was built in 1920 and appears to not have been shot often. Who should I talk with about getting an accurate appraisal as to what the gun is worth?

Here is a two barrel XE at Cabelas. It has been for sale for a long time and seems to me to be overpriced. I would rate Marshfellow's appraisal as much superior to Cabela's guess on this one:

Best,

Mike

Edit - I deleted the link to the gun.

How about posting the photos here?

I thought we were not suppose to post links to guns for sale?

The gun at Cabela's is on consignment... the seller is allowed to ask whatever he wants... that said... a separate cabela had one listed for several months at close to half of that price and it took some time to sell and certainly sol for much less than asking price. Another two barrel XE set sold online recently for 1/4 of what the linked Cabela's gun is listed at.... (admittedly it had a replaced rib) but came with one set of 32" barrels.

I think the Cabela's ad is not even in the ball park and should be thrown out on principle ...

obviously Tom can give as good an estimate as anyone on a Fox...
Cheers!

I think the rule is we aren't supposed to sell guns on this forum. I don't own the gun at Cabelas and was using it in a discussion about value.

I had a couple of lengthy discussions with Scott about the XE belonging to his friend that he posted about. I have suggested to him that it would be advantageous to post a few pix here for all to see and appreciate.

I am going to post a copy of the card here for info purposes on the discussion of this particular Fox....I hope I am not out of line as this is not the "members" forum....I would like non-members (hopefully future members) to see what a tremendous value these cards have to our hobby/interest.

It doesnt appear that both sets of bbls were ordered at the outset.

Where have I seen J.A. Johnston before???

A friend bought two Becker Foxes, one a D Grade, from a sports store not far from Philadelphia. Maybe you have read my description of the day I didn't feel like driving way up the road to look at two rusty old shotguns and so a friend who lived closer went on over to look at them. The fellow who told us about them decided he was not interested. Long story short, one of the guns had the trigger guard from one of Nash's Beckers that Burt had restocked into a different grip style not consistent with that trigger guard. The known NB serial number was on the guard. One of those two guns was originally shipped to J.A. Johnston. I have the info in my notes but haven't located it. If I was ever able to find J.A. Johnston, I don't remember. I hope I am not mistaken about Johnston being connected with that Becker. If I have confused it with some other gun, my friend will read this and correct me.

Tom I am not positive but I believe he was a supplier in the Pittsburgh PA area. I seem to remember reading that on one of the other gun forums. Please don't take that as Fact. Maybe Researcher will come along with info.

I posted the card for SN 300225 on March 13 in the Members Forum. The card has For "J. A. Johnston" on the bottom. Just do search for the serial number and the post should pop up.
