Cowboy's Fox HE

A short while back a fellow called MTCowboy(?) posted at the Dlbgunshop about a Fox He he was gifted by a MT rancher. There were some sceptics but it's for real and the gun is in my shop being photographed and I will have it for about another hour. On the off chance that any ones watching, any specific photo requests?
I'll post some pix later.

This is a very interesting shotgun!
But First,a couple of items:
1) The gun is Not For Sale, please dont' try to contact cowboy or me about buying it! Several did when he first posted & pissed him off!
2) I didn't make a dime today, while I understand this is a hobby to most of you, I have to watch my time in order to contribute to your hobby. I will probably do a column in Shooting Sportsman that will contain more info than I can post here.
Thanks for understanding! I had the gun for about 3 hours and was at it constantly until it went away.

A few facts: 12 ga., 32" barrels, 2 1/2" chambers as measured with 2 different chamber length gauges.The gun is in pretty good shape except for having spent time in a wet basement. The owner carefully remove the rust from the barrels without destroying the bluing. Lever to right, tight on face. The stock and forend have repairable cracks, and the wood is good except for having been cut-off for the abysmal recoil pad (wood length at 13 1/4") Drop: 1 5/8" X 2 5/8". very restorable, and deserving! The bore and chokes are very interesting and I'll post more on that later. (Yes, I double checked all those dimensions!)

Gun looks good to me as far as when he first posted the gun if you have a HE and put it out there as you don't know what you have ther are going to be people trying to buy the gun. So if he was pissed about someone liking his gun then too bad. Donnie

And how do we know this gun doesn't match the factory card?

Regarding the chambers measuring 2-1/2" that doesn't surprise me at all. Early HE's were designed with very tight chambers. HE 2-3/4" chambers will often measure about 2-1/2" with typical plug type chamber gauges. Likewise factory 3" chambers will often seem about 1/4" short when using a plug chamber gauge. Silvers

Steve: Thanks for the pictures, looks like a very interesting gun. The bores on Supers of this time frame should be .744-.745 with about .050/.047 chokes. Most of the Supers we have encountered have recoil pads and have seen the abuse of spending many days in the blind. I have seen very few straight grip Super-Foxes, but the stock on 28326 sure looks correct to me. Thanks again for sharing. Craig

Drew, this HE just surfaced and no member has requested a card check on it. So, why question the stock style shown in the pics especially since its stock certainly looks factory?

The gun is gone from my shop and I'll be surprised if I ever see it again, maybe? I did photograph it extensively. This is the first H Grade I've ever had in the shop to really inspect. The gun appears to be all original except the pad. The tight chambes comment is right on the mark as that is the way they felt with the gauge.
The bores and chokes are:
L- .748' and .058"
R- .747' and .047"
The chokes are nearly 5" long and seem to be a taper all the way to the muzzle.
The gun weighs 9 lb 4 oz and the barrels weigh 5 lb 3 oz.
Stock dimensions: 13 1/4 to cut stock. Drop 1 -5/8" X 2 5/8" About 3/8" cast off.
I was most impressed with comparing the action to a normal 12 ga. definately Mark McGuire proportions!
