Well, just to keep things fired up, here are some pertinant pages from the great book, Nash Buckingham's Letters to John Bailey --

If this is BoWhoop, the lace on pad doesn't appear in any other photos.

The laced on pad could lend credit to the broken stock on the gun at Julia's. Maybe, just maybe Bo-Whoop was restocked while in nashes possession? Why would Nash have a laced on pad, as in the photo, on a gun that already has a pad? Intriguing, and I for one am Intrigued.

Interestingly, in his 2 DEC 1948 letter, Nash states that his name was on the left barrel of BoWhoop, whereas the Julia gun has his name on the right barrel.
Interestingly, in his 2 DEC 1948 letter, Nash states that his name was on the left barrel of BoWhoop, whereas the Julia gun has his name on the right barrel.
--Yes, and also interesting, although not relevant to his lost Fox shotgun, is his reference to his close friend John Bailey's wife as Katherine, yet in his letter to John he refers to his beloved wife as Mrs. Buckingham and not Irma.

I went to the Evan's anthology about the late Nash Buckingham for further reference to his first Becker-Fox Magnum. The absence of the safety was distinctly detailed, but also the top lever was compared to a faucet handle, in that its axis apparently protruded above the top of the receiver pocket for same. Curious indeed.

Another curious thing noted in Nash's letter was that Bo-Whoop was cased when it was lost. I always assumed that the original stock was broken when it fell off the car fender. If it was cased at the time what is the probability that the stock broke in the fall while in the case? Was it a trunk cas, muttonleg or long case? Does anyone know?

Having just walked out from hunting I'd guess the gun was in a full length soft case. I know I always take guns in soft cases in the car to go hunting. Putting them together and taking them apart for leg-of-mutton or trunk cases while on a hunting trip just isn't in the cards for me.

How often have you seen names and addresses on old soft gun cases from that era?

My experience suggests that the probability of finding a name is more likely on trunk or L-O-M cases than on soft cases.

I believe that he was referring to one of the game wardens.

I just went downstairs and checked, and the old canvas and leather full-length case for my Father's Winchester 94 .32 Special carbine, and the cases for both of his Remington Model 1894 doubles have his name and address stamped on them. Also my Mother's name and address is on the case for her Winchester Model 67.

Dave
I am sorry Dave. I will go to the User Panel and change that so you and I may e-mail through this site and still maintain privacy. Many trolls abound, my daughter just had her wireless laptop invaded by a virus. She is a paralegal, fortunately there was no work product involved. I wasn't sure if you were looking for a few of those older quality cases or not. A friend wanted them for gunslips, he has a pair of Westley Richards guns, but the 30 inch barrels make them too long, as the cases I have were made for the M1892 and M1894 carbines.

My son and I have both the Winchesters that came with those cases, but we use the Boyt/Cabelas heavy duck full length zip cases for both our shotguns and rifles. One is a .30 WCF caliber, the other is a .32 Win Special, and we use them each Fall for deer hunting. Like using a nice AH Fox on birds instead of a Remington 11-87, a nice step back in time and tradition.

Thanks for trying to reach me.

The canvas and leather cases my parents had are all trade marked for Warshalls Sporting Goods in Seattle. I imagine the luggage department at Warshalls did the stamping of the names and addresses on the cases. I'd imagine these cases were made for Warshalls by some local outfit like Puget Sound Tent and Awening.
