Stumbled across an old Fox

Post by csg76 »

I have stumbled across an old Fox shotgun I may purchase and would like some help Identifying/dating it. It says Ansly H. Fox on the side of the shot gun. It was made in Philadelphia. The serial number is 302xxx. It is a 16 ga. Metal is in very good condition. The stock has a split in it that has been repaired. It is an a grade. Any Ideas on possible value would be helpful. Also chamber length. I have an old L.C. Smith that is a 21/2" chamber. Is it posible that this fox is the same.

Any info would be appreciated

Thanks

Most Philadelphia era Ansley H. Fox 16-gauge guns were chambered for the 2 9/16 inch 16-gauge shells, the American standard 16-gauge shell until after WW-II. A very few were special ordered chambered for 2 3/4, 2 7/8 or 3-inch shells. The normal A.H. Fox Gun Co. practice was to hold chambers an 1/8 inch shorter then the intended shell, so most Fox 16-gauge chambers were actually 2 7/16 inch when the gun left North 18th street and Windrim Avenue.
