Re: Thanks to the Fox forum - before and after pics

Thanks for the compliment, I am still learning. I love taking basket cases and making them shooters again. Hopefully as I progress I can start making shooters new again. I blooded the old girl on quail yesterday, and I hate to admit that I shot it much better than the LC Smith that I took along. Her...

Re: Removing top lever - complete disassembly?

Is there a correct way to re-install the top lever spring and plunger? Swearing and grunting did eventually work but I can't believe there isn't a better way. I kept pushing the spring into the receiver with the flat of a screwdriver and then screwing the "post" it bears against in a littl...

Thanks to the Fox forum - before and after pics

Thank you to all of you who offered insight on this my first Fox project (I have only worked on LC Smith's before). Although the break at the wrist is still obvious after a refinish it is plenty solid, and a benefit of doing all the work myself is if it ever breaks I will fix it again. I also feel t...

Re: Stock broken at the wrist

I see now how that works, it bears against the opposite slope on the trigger housing. I asked earlier what keeps the stock tight on the action, I guess that would be it? It is acraglas in the stock. I will have to make that piece and then glass it in. I don't have anything to use as a pattern. Could...

Removing top lever - complete disassembly?

Pardon my ignorance, I am an LC Smith guy. I am working on a 1926 vintage Sterlingworth, extractor gun. Can I pull the top lever off the frame without doing a complete disassembly of the action? I would like to have the top lever off to refinish it, and the tang underneath, but I don't want to pull ...

Re: Checkering on a 1926 Sterlingworth?

My attitude has also been to just refresh what is there, "character" and all. I am pretty new at this, so I have to work hard just to avoid adding any "character" of my own.

Re: Stock broken at the wrist

Since I figure I have nothing to lose I am going to take a run at fixing this one. I had the stock in acetone soaking for a little over a day, so I think I have the wood pretty well dried out of oil. I have seen all kinds of reinforcements put into stock through a break, but have also heard the area...

Re: Checkering on a 1926 Sterlingworth?

Here is the forend, before, during, and after repointing, and then after a soak in acetone. Now to pull the dents, sand the scratches and get some oil back on it. What gets me is that there are "mistakes" in the checkering. I have seen the same thing on LC Smith guns. On this forend there ...

Re: Stock broken at the wrist

http://i991.photobucket.com/albums/af39/doebyc/009-2.jpg I think there may be some wood missing inside, I will have to build a "dam" and fill it up with glass. I thought about using a bushing for where the through bolt goes up and down through the wrist. I have a really dumb question, Wit...

Stock broken at the wrist

I just got my first Fox, a 1926 Sterlingworth that is broken at the wrist. There was already a wavy flat nail in the head (I have read this could have been factory). I actually had to remove the nail as it wouldn't allow the pieces to go together properly. I am used to LC Smith guns, and there are a...

Checkering on a 1926 Sterlingworth?

Should my 1926 Sterlingworth have flat top checkering like the LC Smith guns do? I am a sidelock guy, but got a deal I couldn't resist on a Fox that needs a restoration, just wondered how the checkering should be finished (it is still all visible, but not deep).
Thanks,
