Fox in Michigan

Post by vaturkey »

Just got back from a another week in Michigan chasing the king (who wasn't cooperating). Did find some Woodcock and enough to make it fun for me and Sophie. She was on her game and ready to rock and roll. Shot limits three times over her during the week as she was sticking them pretty good. Sophie is 2.5 years old and starting to figure out these long beaked birds. Anyway, a few pics. Didn't take many as it rained 5 out of the 6 days we were there. This is my little upgraded Sterly ejector 20 gauge that has been restocked and engraved as a second generation A grade.

Tom, great picture and I sure am jealous. I went out Thursday afternoon and couldn't find a single woodcock. I was in Newago county, which I'm sure was south of where you were hunting. I was hoping that they were starting to migrate a little after all of that rain, but if they were, it wasn't by me. Please don't disclose your lucky spot, but would you be willing to let me know roughly where you were (county)? Jeff

Tom, you look great. Great picture. Glad Sophie is doing so well. My Mazie is also 2 1/2 years old. She has a lot of enthusiam and energy and she is starting to figure out duck hunting. But, she needs practice marking downed birds.

Not sure of the county as I was a guest of someone who hunts in that area pretty often. FWIW, we were there a week and I got exactly 3 shots at grouse and failed to connect. Hatch is way way down from what I've been told given a pile of rain when the chicks were hatching. Area was Northern Lower on the West side.

That's a good area Tom and I usually get out there once or twice a year. I have yet to flush a woodcock so you have my admiration.

Great job on the 'doodles, Tom. Perfect gun for the job at hand, too.

By your expression, it's easy to tell you were enjoying yourself so, next time, go ahead and show us those pearly whites ........... it's okay.

All the best, SRH

Great post, Tom. Now I don't feel so bad per my post just before you left for your trip re: our near-bust trip to NY State for grouse on the opening weekend (1 Oct.). Seems the reports coming in says their numbers are down all over. If it wasn't for buddy Pete's lone woodcock, the trip would have been a zero. Kevin

Thought about an upgrade to a B grade, but then you are into checkered cheeks, and barrel engraving as well. Decided that was more then what I wanted to stick into my shooter gun. I took it out rain or shine and we both did one or two faceplants while in the field while up there. I shoot it really well.

Kevin, I shot at exactly 3 grouse in 6 days. Their hatch was god awful up there. I heard it rained like 25 out of 26 days straight post grouse hatch. I had a friend who didn't even pop a cap at a grouse all week. Even the Woodcock were below the norms, but we hit three good days where we found enough to make it a pile of fun.
