Fox Collectors

I have a friend who just purchased his first Fox: He asked me what books I had on the subject, and I could offer him McIntosh's "Best Guns," but he
asked if there was some publication that listed model numbers, serial numbers, etc.
Being someone who has become more and more enamored with these guns, I thought it time to buy what you fellows might recommend as "required reading" for Foxes.

McIntosh's book A.H.Fox is the only book that is entirely devoted to the Fox gun, that I know of. If you have access to the early issues of the Double Gun Journal, there is a wealth of information there, mainly by Tom Kidd and Dave Noreen. Steven Dodd Hughes book Double Shotguns contains a lot of information on the mechanics of the Fox (and others) but no serial number or other collector info. In my opinion, this website has more useful info than any book out there. Fred

Following is a link to the only summation of Fox serial numbers that I have encountered. Be cautious because it's accuracy has come into question by Dave Noreen (Researcher) who has studied the Fox gun and was the principal researcher for the McIntosh book on A. H. Fox.

The only truly accurate way to determine the date of Fox guns is by way of a research letter from

John T Callahan John T. Callahan Arms Historian P.O. Box 82 Southampton, MA 01073. Provide the serial number, gauge, and grade and enclose a check for $30 for Sterlingworths and $40 for graded guns. You will receive a letter in 4-8 weeks

Thanks for the good information: I have emailed my friend, who is a reader, headed overseas for a month or so. I bet he will buy and read the "Finest Gun in the World" before I see him again, and with his memory will know more about them than I do. I guess it's time for me to buy a copy as well.

I once sold Guns in a Cabela's Gun Library: (Back in the day) I had a friend come in who was working for a hunting place as a guide, and wanted to try a "double barrel" because he kept hearing about them. I showed him a nice 12 gauge Fox: He bought it from me, and the next time I saw him, I asked "How do you like the Fox?" His reply was "Sam, I can't miss with that thing; it's almost unfair....do you have a 20 gauge?" We did, and I sold it to him as well.
Now, he was already a very, very good shooter, so it cannot be all credited to the Guns, but it's a nice story of another guy hooked on Foxes.
